Linear to the MAX?

From what little I've read, this game sounds 100% linear. Is that true? I've been reading that you constantly have to retrace your steps also. That's terrible game design, so I'm hoping that this isn't true. I just bought the game, but if I'm constantly going back and forth so that the game seems much bigger than it really is, I think I'll take it back. I hate games that make you find a key/device that was used way back in area 1, so you have to retrace your path constantly. Does that happen? TIA

Thanks guys!

I took it back. The game was really getting on my nerves. I'm going back to Divine Divinity and I might pick up the Morrowind expansion also.
