one or two hander?

In G2, it is not as clear that two hander should outclass one hander. The biggest advantage of one-hander is you can get it pretty easily very early in the game, so saving some learning points. The reach advantage which is so important in G1 isn't obvious in G2. In fact, I haven't found any real evidence on that.

So what do you think?

One handed:
Fast, not much strenght needed, cheap, lesser damage and lesser reach than 2 handed.

Two handed:
Slow, much strenght needed, more expensive than 1 handed, greater damage and greater reach.

Als merc and paly I prefer 2 handed, as mage I prefer 1 handed.

In the end you'll certainly notice something with the different range. The largest two-hander is almost 1.5 times longer than the largest one-hander. It's just a matter of taste, they both have pro's and cons

Did you find any evidence that two hander is (needed/ makes it easier) against some opponents?

There is an old post about this, you should take a look at it.

So? It's like Sem said;
every type of weapons has it's advantages and disadvantages. You just have to figure out what weapon suits you the most or the type of character you're playing.

Well, against animals I think a one-hander is more usefull, because it's faster and you can't block anyway. Against skeletons and other fighters I think you'll have an advantage with a two-hander, you can hit them before they are able to hit you. But then again with a one-hander you can block faster and you can hit multiple times when the enemy raises his weapon, and a two-hander is also good against animals. You'll do more damage and you can hit the animals before they reach you and so keep them on a safe distance.

Conclusion: they both have their pro's and cons. It's just a matter of taste. This subject has been discussed many times and the developers did a very good job making them balanced. The only thing is that one-handed weapons are much easier to get than two-handers.

The damage thing is about 20 Damage in the end.. The strenth Damage remains the same so 110+Str(1Handed Merc.) or 130+Str(2Handed Merc.)
And the 1 Handed Hits a lot faster with 100 % than the 2 Handed with 100%
The 1 Handed blocks faster and u can make more swings when the bad guys aint blocking.
Then there is the range thing, the largest 1 Handers have such a range it doesn't matter if it were a little longer..
Due to the bonus'es with 1 Handed i will say the BEST CHOICE !
Ive completed the games 13 times and 2 times i used 2 handed, i say 2 times to much due to the 1 handed..
And in NoTR u really want to use 1 handed.. u will find out why!

it's not about the damage, but about the range and speed. you won't notice the difference between a 1 hander with 130 damage and 2 hander with 160 base damage, because all that really matters is critical strike (that's about 90% of the damage you do and 10 times more than with a normal blow).

2 handers are the best agains skeletons and other swordfighters. but not always. i find it much more easier to kill an orc with a 1 hander than with a 2 hander, because you can hit him up to 2-3 times before he will start to block, and orc's range isn't that large anyway. elite orcs, however, are a different matter.

2 handers could be useful against some monsters, like lizards, specialy the fire lizards, as you don't want them to come to close. but i never tryed this in a practical way, just speculating.

but the problem is that 2 handers are hard to get by, and require much more strength than their brotherins, so that's why 90% of the people specialise in 1 handed combat at the begining of the game. have you ever seen a 2 handed sword with 20 required strength? all you can get at the begining of the gothic 2 is a rusty axe with 40 required strength and 30 damage, well thanks for that.

the quickest way to obtain a 2 hander and to specilase in that type of combat would be to get to level 3 with doing the quests in the city and than steal Rod's sword (30 required strength), that seems to be a good start for a 2 handed fighter. Never actually tryed that way, but perhaps I will, just about next time I will play the game from the begining.

What about "Beliars Claw" It is simply the best 1 handed!
2 handed is damages 10 more ?.. so what ?.. The lightning damage is still at 50 % chance max.. and for the range between 1 handed and 2 handed with that sword, i dont think there is a difference.. the range with the 1 handed is so long that if i stand on a open place a strikes i will hit the ground in the sites i think 2 handed does as well..

Well, Beliar's Claw is a unique weapon and that's a little different, it's not because it's a one hander. Uriziel was 2 handed

But if you ask me, 2 handed weapons were a greater advantage in Gothic 1 than now.

There is a REALLY SWEET 1 handed dexterity-based sword in NOTR.

It's called the Master Epee. Does 130 dmg, but only requires 60 dex AND adds 10 to your 1 handed skill. Simply a killer weapon. As soon as I was able, I used it all throughout NOTR and became a dex fighter.

You can get it in Khorinis from Martin, who is located with the Paladins at the harbor. Costs around 2K.

Just use magic, you won't have to worry about one- or two-handed.

I'd go with the two-hander. Forget about finese with one-handed weapons while blocking and dodging blows when you've got 4 orc elites on you; Gothic II's melee system isn't well suited to this. As such, you need to dispatch your enemies as quickly as possible and this is where the damage factor is especially important when battling multiple opponents.
