What is the outdoorsman skill? Does it let you skin animals if it's high enough? I know I can skin the Rad Scorpions near Shady Sands...well at least their tails. So is that what it does?

if you have a high outdoorsman skill, you can choose to go or not to go in an encounter. your chance of *special encounters* is rising with this skill.

put no skill points in this skill - you can buy enough books for learning it.

Happy Pathfinding

I'd add that the ability to skin geckos comes via a quest. The outdoorsman skill relates strictly to random encounters, like HiddenX said. The scorpion tails should show up automatically in the "plunder" window. Watch out, cuz they're 10lbs a piece!

Actually, early in Fallout 1 I noticed that my character would stop every once in a while to forage for food or water and that would increase my experience from a successful use of the outdoorsman skill. Of course, this only happened when I traveled directly west from the Vault toward the mutant base and I had jacked up my outdoorsman skill. Weird.

Ok, thanks for your help guys. This really explains a lot. Now, on this topic of special encounters.... In Fallout 2, I'm currently on this side quest to make sure the city of Modac (sp?) becomes trading buddies with the Slags. However, the mayor of Modac, won't agree to this until I find a farmer named Karl. Well, I'm sure you guys know the rest of the story....anyways, the leader of the Slags says Karl ran to the NW - but I can't find him anywhere and I only have nine days left until Modac puts a beating to the Slags. So according to the theory, if my outdoorsman skill is high enough, I can find Karl? [I'm assuming he'snot in a village somewhere]

Now back to Fallout 1, in Vault 15, is there obsoletely nothing you can do when you reach the command center? I ask this because I found explosives in a locker....I thought maybe you blow something up. ...but I don't think the water chip is there anyway. Just thought you might get some XP for finding out there is not a chip there.

Fallout 2 question: Karl is at the "place of scum and villiany." If you need a bigger hint let me know.

Fallout 1 question: You're supposed to walk near a certain area on the lower level and I think if your character is intelligent enough he will realize that the water chip isn't there and you'll get exp for that.
