Cheap digital cameras

I can go to Best Buy or Wal-Mart and buy a digital camera for $200-$300. I can go to the local discount dollar store and buy a cheap one for $20-$40. What is the difference? What will I gain from buying the expensive one? What will I be able to do with the cheap one?

As with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

An expensive camera will have a decent resolution, which could be anywhere from 2 to 7 megapixels - a cheap camera will usually be sub-1 megapixel. An expensive camera will have lots of storage in the form of removable memory cards, a cheap camera will likely have a small amount of fixed memory. An expensive camera will have bells and whistles like optical zoom, flash, shutter speeds, movie modes etc, while a cheap camera will be hard pressed to have a usuable flash.

Cheap cameras will take a limited number of low-resolution, low-quality pictures. They're fine for messing about with friends and emailing around, but no good if you want to replace a 35mm camera, or keep any of the pictures you take.

So if I want to use pictures to save on my computer to document my weight loss, then a cheap camera will suffice.

Yes, even a webcam could do that, but if you need mobility, a cheap camera will do.
