Just starting out and would like to know how do I know what area I'm in. The game is large, and I looked at the map but nothing names the specific area that I'm in. Aren't the towns (if there is any) named. I'm just in the first area (the tunnels after your plane crashes)
Comment - I thought the manual for Gothic was small, but Wizard's isn't even worse. It's probably ok if you've played Sir Tech stuff before, but I haven't. The manual leave alot to be desired.

The Wizardry manual has over 130 pages versus the wimpy 18 page Gothic 'manual' if that's what you want to call it.
Just so you know, you are in the Monastery. Pay attention and you'll know where you are in the world oh, and make good use of putting notes on your maps in case you need to return to a specific location.

Wiz manual is long, but most of it's length is due to appendixes. They really don't explain a lot of things well...it's not the quantity of manual which helps, it's the quality...
Max, listen to this guy...use notes on your maps as much as possible!! It will save you headaches later on...trust me! By just making a note like "To upper monastery" or "locked safe" will make those things much easier to find later.
And no, nothing is prelabeled on your map.. no town names, nothing. You have to do all of that yourself..kind of stinks, I know.. but once you get used to it, it's not bad..

Yes it's useful for marking 'locked doors' and 'locked chests' but it's always a good idea to 'erase' these when you unlock chests or doors to prevent you from wasting time going there only to find out you've unlocked them already.
It's a long game and maintaining your map 'notes' will save you lots of time in the long run.
And hey I loved Gothic, but the appendicies in the Wiz 8 manual include such things as spell descriptions, profession and race descriptions; I'd hardly call that useless info.

Max, Wiz8 world is maybe large, but not so large as it looks like. It is easy to orientate here, it only take some time...

Actually, there is a little map in the Manual. But in general try to look at it like this: You crash-land on an unknown planet, and have to figure out yourself where you are, and what the places are called. But as Danicek says: You will soon be familiar with the places, so go explore and enjoy and prepare to discover things yourself regarding the world and the right combat tactics. It's not a braindead shooter where you only have to pull the trigger to survive. I guess if you learn to survive the game the first 20-25 hours, and then things hopefully is going easier for you, a very great game will await you! |
