Not in the slightest. Naturally they're people too... they want a fair share of the treasure you find. That's common sense. So is not ticking off the party who holds your life in their hands. Hirelings want a share of the treasure like anyone else in the party and will probably call you a jackass and leave if you don't give it to them (they may even come back as undead death knights and murder you in your sleep, depending on the DM) but the auto-loot is just the stupidest thing in a computer game ever.

The worst and most stupid thing about the NPC's was that they would take Quest related items and not give them to you. That meant one more dead NPC very soon. One was enough for me.

So it is blunt mistake in game design or serious lack of testing.
