I know wich entrance you mean, tried it a several times from that side but actually i found it almost harder than coming from the stairways
but I have never tried it in chapter 1
I have a big hate against the skeletons in gothic and gothic 2, they are almost every time you see them so powerful that you die or start running

I hate the skellies hehe. They have an auto parry like some animals. I just wait till they strafe then take a swipe at them.

Its kinda hard to do when you have alot on you, so equip a 1hd if you are a good fighter, and well trained and just backpetal and left or right hit.

This is just how I used to do it, Ive adopted a 2hd way too though. Just keep them back with a forward stroke, and I just wait for a strafe. Thats where they are the weakest.

Here's another guess.

Maybe Diego's advice isn't important after all. Maybe it was just an example of the kind of advice you are given early on.

In the beginning of the game, when you meet your first hunters, one of them describes places like this one and says to avoid them "especially at night." I just assumed that whatever monsters you would run into might be nastier then, but I never bothered to see if it made any difference going in at night.

Could it make a difference, going in at night? Could that tie in with the clue: "happy hunting?"

Well Squeek,

It may be as you say "another guess" but it is a subject i have often thought about but could never spot the link. the stat's of the skeletons and skeleton mages are the same for both day and night, but that doesn't mean you idea is wrong, in fact to honest, it's the nearest clue yet.
If you read all the books mentioned previously, can you see any notional suggestions or links in the wording, i certainly can! - -
Remember wolverine_mens denouncement by others when he said he tried for four hours, - - - well now "what could happen in four hours"

Here's my current thinking about this.

I started a new game and completed the Chromanin quest in chapter 1 (yes, I was in a hurry). I did everything relating to the quest at night and still got the same result: I found the corpse.

I'm now thinking there are two possiblities that are most likely:

1) The Stranger was simply the Skeleton Mage of the Fog Tower, and we killed him at the start. His books are a first-hand description of the process more plainly described in the book "True Power." Arguably, it's how a mage can work to become a lich. In my game, "True Power" was the only book placed below the Chromanin books in the menu, almost as if it were the final book in the series.

2) There is an alternative ending to the quest other than retrieving Book Six from the corpse. The clue in Book Five is, "You will find me where it all began." Maybe it all began somewhere else for The Stranger, and that's where we will find him. But I think it's one or the other. You either take Book Six from the corpse or you find The Stranger somewhere else.

Of course, this may simply be a quest the developers weren't able to complete as they first intended. I love this game and prefer to believe that The Stranger can be found.

@Squeek,

Good interesting points,

"The stranger" was not in the first draft of the game but was added in the patch which is embedded in the international version.

The stranger (the old man) can be found, with patience and - - - "luck" - - - and then only if you are "worthy" - - - here are some further words which may help to understand the "righteous" aspect:-

Depravity. - given to evil course, corruption of moral principles, wickedness, profligacy.

Dissolute. - loose in behaviour, licentious, debauched (moral vitiation)

Righteousness. - integrity, purity of heart and rectitude of life, justice.

Wasting. - desolating, enfeebling, to weaken.

It's a hard road to tread, with many a winding turn and deviation from the true path. Can you put your hand on your heart and swear that you fit these requirements ?

This sounds like a wild goose chase to me.

Good luck though.

Hey there kriksa,

Don't know about any others but i'm still looking out, three and a half years and still looking, - - taking my time, only another couple to go then i'll call it quits.
On principle, in a way i think it's right that i should find him again, as there are a lot of doubting Thomas's out there who can't find him, at least i have met him once. I wish i could read game code (C ++) then i could search for the flags and find the "missing link"

It's good to know that people are still striving hard to crack that seemingly elusive puzzle. I have just dropped by to make an announcement. Whoever finds the stranger alive on or before 25th December 12:00 AM will get an Alienware PC as a reward from me. In order to qualify for the prize you would need to produce conclusive evidence in the form of a screen shot. The screen shot should be posted on any URL that would be publicly accessible. People can voice their opinions regarding the authenticity of the screen shot in this thread or a separate one.
PS: I am not kidding.

Hey there wolverine_men you crafty fox,

Thanks for "dropping by" - - - that is indeed a most generous offer, i suppose now that all of the "doubting Thomas's" will crawl out of the woodwork and declare " i believed it all along" - "let me have a go"

I do believe, with some slight reservations, that i may have a chance of being the winner! - - time will tell. (by the way 25-dec' is my birthday) - truely!
how about that.

Thank you wolverine_men, you are an ace

With all due respect wolverine_men, what about some proof that you'll actually follow up on your offer?

You certainly have a point, Rubix3, but isn't asking for proof a little like "looking a gift horse in the mouth?"

Reassurance would be welcome, and proof would, of course, be even better. But it's not really necessary, and it's not required to be fair. I think the offer is fair enough as it stands. It's also generous. If it's a hoax, then we will waste our time. Too bad. If it's for real...well, then this is very cool.

Myself, I am buying in. If I decide to change my mind later, then I will stop making the effort.

Interesting

I must say that seeing this is very interesting, i have finished gothic 3 times so far i think, and have always found the old mean lying dead in that cave, and the 6th book blank, but that isnt surprising, because i am the type who always plays like an orc.i kill anything that i can kill without damaging any quests or something similar,i slaughter everything that is possible to slaughter without making a difference, why normally i even clean out the entire outer ring in the old camp before i even join any guild, and i do mean clean it out, except for the ones that are important,or cant be killed, like one of the gate guards, i mostly do this for experience, first i knock them down, then i use the bow to kill them after they get up,exploiting this bug to get me double experience for each victim but this is indeed interesting... and as it seems some here are puttting a lot of effort into solving the riddle of this old man, personally i dont know what to think about it,i would really like to believe it to be true, although due to gothic's overall flimsy composition i would say its a little hard that they would have hidden this so well, next to that the thing with buying someone who figures it out a new computer is also rather excessive, after all you never know when someone may get lucky and find the old man, no one in their right mind i believe would be willing to take such a risk, unless there is nothing to risk because its all a hoax, and Wolverine_men could easily provide some screenshot proof of this event without giving away any secrets, yet he refuses to do so, seems terribly suspicious to me, but mainly i just wanted to say that.. if something like this is indeed possible, then surely it would be written in the official gothic strategy guide,if you really want to clear this up,i suggest someone get their hands on one and take a look,if its not written in there, then its not real
