Access Violation at first screen

Alright I can get by the intro and the menus, but as soon as the first game screen shows up i get an access violation though i can still hear the music playing:

D:\dev\gothic\current_work\Gothic\_Ulf\Ovob.cpp, line 701
001B:0A93C284 (0xFFFFFFFF 0x0129FB50 0x00528EF0 0x00899410) SHW32.DLL, shi_malloc()+20 byte(s)
001B:007E80D8 (0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000) gothic.exe, SetFileAttributesA()+230982 byte(s)

The only dll that shows up in the crash log is shw32.dll Ive tried replacing switching this around with different version, copy , paste etc, but nothing. I have the latest patch, DX9, Geforce 4 ti4200 30.82 drivers, soundblaster audigy, 512 ddr, athlonxp 1.66Ghz,

Oh and the file shw32.dll has something to do with memory management and ive tried changing my paging file (to 700 megs ) etc. From my research its short for SmartHeapW32 by Microquill somr sort of memory enhancer that, I , didn't install but the game uses/puts in.

Please help me.

Is that, like, the first access violation problem you have experienced?
DX9 might be causing troubles (but not that kind of troubles..).
Appart from that, you haven't stated your os (xp I presume). Try the game on the win98 system.

pos?

Aw, access violation problems are related to memory (figures..); but how exactly (hw problems, or something else), I cannot tell in your case..
Try reinstalling the game..

The 30.82 detonators are relatively old. Maybe you should update to a later version.
You said you applied patch 1.08k. Did you close all other programs in the task manager? Gothic doesn´t like virus scanners and overclocking utils.
Another idea is disabling sound in the gothic.ini to find out if the sound card causes the problems.

I tried turning off sound in the ini. I tried the newer 41.xx drivers. I tried reducing the sound acceleration to 0(emulation), and ive got rid of all background programs and still got the error. oh and i have tried reinstalling.

Alright, i've isolated the issue. I took both my gf4 and my audigy out and put my gf256 in: game worked. I put the gf4 back it didnt, sooo it has something to do with my gf4 i dont think its the driver version as i have tried multiple ones, any thoughts? Oh and I have tried with agp 4x on and off

Well I found what the problem was and gothics working perfectly now. Seems it didnt like me having my agp texture size set to 4 megs in the bios so i turned it up to 64. But frankly thats retarded seeing as my video card is 128 megs and im pretty sure it could all fit in there seeing as far more intensive, modern games dont even fill it up.
