With so many possibilites, have you decided what race/class combos you'll be using?

Will you change professions or stick with one the whole game?

Here's the party I'm currently thinking about using:
1. Dracon Fighter - will probably stay a Fighter
2. Human Fighter - change to Samurai later
3. Elven Ranger - change to Ninja later
4. Elven Priest - stay a Priest or possibly change to Valkyrie or Bard
5. Human Mage - stay a Mage or possibly some specialized caster
6. Human Rogue - change to Gadgeteer later

With the info I have, my party for now is:

Lizardman -> Samurai
Mook -> Mage
Felpurr -> Gadgeteer
Dracon -> ranger
Human -> Bard
Rawulf -> Bishop

I can change my mind after reading the Wizardry 8 manual and before starting the game, but I won't change my party during the game!

I was just reading a little bit on the official Wiz 8 board, and it sounds like changing professions will work differently than in the previous games. Looks like I'll have to wait for the manual to do my planning.

As you mentioned, the party *should* be low in hp. However, from what I've seen from the demo (which is rather odd imo), the Bard and Priests had as many hp as the Monk and Ranger (about 50 hp each). Only the fighter had more hp. I'm guessing the Gadgeteer will only also have about the same amount of hp.

I think my formation will be something like this:

NPC1________________________NPC2

_________Mage_____Priest__________
________Psionic____Alchie_________

Bard________________________Gadgeteer.

BTW, I think you can change class whenever you lvl up. When you enter the lvling up screen, you can choose what new class you want to be.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I'm definitely NOT changing class mid-game. I hate multiclassing.

My copy/paste list.

1. Fighter, My physical powerhouse with an axe.
2. Lord, In the front row with the fighter with double sword and my backup of priest spells.
3. Ranger, My master archer with unique searching abilities (so i don't miss anything) and mythology knowledge.
4. Gadgeteer, Modern ranged combat, with abilities in locks & traps, engineering.
5. Bishop, staff/wand wielder with powerfull priest spells. Can remove cursed items, and know about alchemy,wizardry and communication.
6. Mage, Magic when it's best.

I guess this combination covers the most of all the traits and abilities in combination to using different weapons and armoury!
I think I will learn all my characters to use ranged combat in some degree, because I found it somehow important in the demo!

Regarding multiclass I have 2 questions to consider before using it!
1. Will you keep the abilities from your previous class both strength and weeknesses, like the AD&D rules???
2. Will there be a level cap, you easy can reach, which makes multiclass more attractive.
I mentioned it before, but I want to point it out again, I like to have very different character types to be able to use all the good stuff I find and not running short of options when I face different problems.
Different magic users with different areas of power don't cut it for me, for one thing I can only use robes and staffs!

I can't give definite answers to your questions, because I actually haven't read all that much about how the game will work. I knew from the start that I wanted the game, and I can't stand too much anticipation.

But here's what I've heard from other people. Don't take it as hard fact.

1.Yes

2.Not really. There may be a level cap, but I haven't heard of it. Even if there is, when you switch class, you don't drop down to level 1 like before. If your level 5 rogue makes level 6 and changes to a ninja, you become a level 6 ninja. This means you need just as much or more exp to get your next level, unlike in Wiz 7.

If this is how it works, I'll have to re-think my plans for my party. I wish I knew how readily available NPCs would be. If there will be many classes to choose from that could influence my party choice as opposed to if there's only going to be a couple of major NPCs you meet throughout the game.

EDIT:
I've recently read more posts that contradict both of my answers above, so you might as well disregard them. It seems like nobody knows exactly how it will work yet, so I'll just wait a few days for the manual.

I know what you mean. I never like to feel I'm missing out on something in a game.

If I carry over my team from wiz7 they'll look very old. Given the change in switching professions, I'll probably start fresh with a samurai, ninja, ranger, bard and two bishops. Slow starting but devasting later.(But what about the Gadgeteer?--decisions--decisions--)

Rangstrom: Interesting party, but they are short on Lockpicking, Trap removing, and concentrated magic. I don't no if you want to multiclass to these traits later or try to do without them. We yet also don't no which abilities will become more important, than others.
Raldor: Your party reminds me much of mine in various characters, and my only concern is the multiclass of the Ranger to Ninja. If the Ninja inherit the Rangers abilities of unique search abilities, critical strike, and Mythology knowledge then no problem, otherwise I wouldn't do it!

Well, I got the game and I'm really loving it. Here's how my party ended up for anyone that cares. As you can see, I reworked them quite a bit. I will most likely not be doing any class changes with the possible exception of my priest thinking about becoming a bishop much later when she's an expert healer.

1. Human fighter, the leader. He uses a sword and shield. Not opposed to using a big 2H sword if he finds a nice one. Well rounded good fighter.

2. Dracon fighter, the beast. Already maxed out his strength and hits like a truck with his 2H axe. Sometimes switches to dual axes. Between this one and the human fighter, they do most of the damage.

3. Human samurai, he dual wields and hits for less damage than the fighters, but he almost always hits, and sometimes gets many attacks per round. He also occasionally has an instant kill, and just says "That's that"

4. Hobbit rogue, more of a burglar than a pickpocket or shoplifter. He talks like a psychopath and picks up anything that isn't nailed down. He has great senses so he spots creatures early and finds many hidden items. Of course he's also an expert at picking locks. He's surprisingly effective with his dual daggers too, but he's usually not within melee attack range.

5. Elven priest, the healer. She's very smart and very pious and keeps the team alive. She's also the master of identifying the party's items.

6. Gnome mage, I thought he'd be my blaster but he's ended up concentrating more on being a support role. He enchants the party's blades, sickens the enemy and melts their armor, or even webs them or puts them to sleep so the fighters can mop them up. Of course if there's a crowd of weaker mosters or several nearly dead, he can kill many foes with one shot. Its lots of fun practicing all his different realms to make up for my heavy specialization on fire early in the game.

Don't read past this point if you don't want to know the classes of 2 of the first 3 RPCs I met. I don't give their names, locations or descriptions, just classes.

Surpisingly, I'm not regretting skipping the ranger or bard. I usually walk around in search mode when I'm not fighting and find plenty of items. I do still miss having a ninja from time to time but I'm getting over it. Though I love my rogue, I do regret not having made a gadgeteer instead. They just seem to add lots of fun to the party. Luckily I was recently able to recruit a gadgeteer. I just hope he sticks around. My other recruit slot is filled by a valkyrie.

Anyway that's how my party turned out. It's not hand picked for maximum uberness, but it works out nicely and I'm getting attached to them which brings back good memories of the old Wizardry games.

So far they're at lvl 8 and staying strong.

Also found something for my gadgeteer to combine!! Finally!

With the Gadgeteer he can focuss on traps while the npc rogue later can deal with stealth and pickpocketing.

Ok, folks, this is my party as i have laid out during the last few hours (I got the full game yesterday and spent most of my time so far reading the excellent manual):

Human Samurai - he'll be my sword guy, doing some fire magic when he is advanced enough.
Felpurr Ninja - deadly front row lady, skilled with throwing weapons, doing some alchemy later.
Elven Bishop - specialising in priest and psionic spells. He should be the healer and a fighter as well.
Hobbit Rogue - don't want leave a single chest untouched.
Mook Ranger - lets the arrows fly.
Faerie Mage - going for the baddies with raw magical power.

I MIGHT change the ranger against a bard, but since I like rangers, I really can't tell...

I'm now 40 hours into the game, and still feel I'm just started discovering the world.
I started with:

Dracon fighter
Dwarf Lord
Mook Ranger
Farie Mage
Elven Bishop
Hobbit Gadgeteer

I would not say my lord is a disappointment, but i will change him to a samurai, with more power in dual weapon sword use, and the ability to use mage spells.
My Dracon fighter is already maxed in Strenght (100), and got the power strike (better penetration change), and my Farie Mage is maxed in "Intelligence" giving her the ability to Power cast" (more damage etc.)

The combination of Race and Profession is very important, because this will depend on how many attribute points you are allowed to distribute at every level up. High attribute stats is very important to hit, or avoid getting hit and many other derived abilities.

I guess my ranger get me a lot more money, by finding all kinds of hidden things that the other characters wouldn't find. And there is a lot of good things you can spend your money on.

The bishop uncurse ability is very usefull in the beginning, but later magic can take over, and i didn't find that much cursed items either. So I guess a good Priest is a good alternative to the bishop, who seems to have a lot of spellbooks, but with no actual power in none of them (until now that is).

The gadgeteer opens chests and doors, and disarm traps, and is good at it. His ranged attack is also fairly good with modern weapons eventhough i still haven't found the ultimate gun for him.

Alchemist - changed to a Mage at level 10
Mage

I wanted all the magic I could get and they are kicking a$$. I also wanted 2 characters capable of throwing Nuke and Fireball. Now, mind you, I can't pick locks very well, but, you get help in the beginning.

Well my party was imported from Wiz7 - but I changed one class early on. My party is:
Felpur Ninja
Felpur Samurai
Elf Monk
Hobbit Bard
Faerie Alchemist
Rawulf Valkyrie

I finished the game with this party and they did really well. The beauty of Wizardry is it was designed so you could beat the game with ANY party. You could have 6 human fighters or even 6 faerie bishops - and you could win the game. This gives the game high replay value in trying out different combinations of race/classes for your party.
I have restarted the game with this party:

Human Ninja
Felpur Samurai
Dwarf Monk
Mook Gadgeteer
Hobbit Bard
Elf Bishop

They are currently still in the monastary but doing well.
