Space Rangers 2: Review @ Gamespot |
|
Gamespot has a lot of positive things to say about Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators. Sporting an 8.1/10.00, they said:
There's so much to do and see in Space Rangers 2 that you might find it overwhelming, but the opposite is true. Aside from a slightly sharp learning curve (it'll take you a little while to get the gist of the game), you'll find yourself caught up in an incredibly vibrant and dynamic universe, looking to do just one more thing before you call it a night, whether it's delivering the Peleng's top-secret pizza recipe to Mars before you run out of time or liberating yet another system from those insidious dominator robots.
Read it all here. |

This game is just impossible to find in stores, at least here in Manhattan. A couple major chains claim to have copies at a few of their branches, but when you actually contact the branches they don't have it and have never heard of it. |

I've played SR 1 and 2, close to finishing 2. SR 1 was awesome. If you like Space RPG's in which you can pretty much do whatever you like, then you'll love this game. Space Rangers 2 does not show alot of new features, though the item database is larger, there's some extra things you can do, and probably the most noticable, the Planetary Combat 'missions'. Basicly what you do in this game, is fly around space, from day 1. Just trying to earn some cash, earn experience to improve your skills and visit planets to buy equipment and gain quests/missions. Apart from flying around in space, killing pirates, raiding merchants or even fighting the powerfull dominators, you can also go inside a wormhole to experience some arcade action, and from time to time you can get missions from planets to fight off some stranded dominators on the planet, resulting in a whole new game experience. In the Planetary Combat missions each time all you have to do is simply take over all enemy HQ's. This is done by building robots, which you can customize with unique weapons and gadgets, you can even equip your bots with a suicidal nuclear bomb. In order to build robots, you must earn resources, which is done by capturing small outposts which each provides a number of 1 resource every so many seconds. Your HQ(s) and Resource Outposts can be protected by turrets, which you'll have to place, eventually you may fight off the dominators far enough to get to their HQ, and by sending in a robot to capture it, you defeat the enemy as soon as all his robots are destroyed as well. Small downside of these battles I think, is that the dominators have the exact same robot hulls and equipment as you, so these missions, which are rather rare, can become rather boring as well, sometimes being way too hard, and other times much too easy.
Not much else to say, the game is awesome, it will keep you playing for hours and hours, considering it can take more than 20 years ingame, which is over 7000 turns/days to complete the game, when 1 turn/day can last from a few seconds to a few minutes of planning, and much longer when doing certain quests. I forgat to mention 1 feature, which is the text quests, though this might sound boring, these are quite fun and usually humurous, though hard. These quests will almost always take several tries to complete it, but then there always is a bit larger reward to claim, apart from planetary battles, these quests pay the most.
I say, get the game if you find it, it's hard to find, but very worth it. That is, if your interested in the genre.
Space Rangers 1 Pirated version or official is FREE for download. The Devs support this. They do, however, accept donations from anyone willing to cash in. SR 1 is not required to be played first to fully experience SR 2, though I can highly recommend it, since SR 1 can be just as much fun.
