Bethesda announces Pirates of the Caribbean
   

A long, but interesting press release from Bethsoft - announcing Pirates of the Caribbean:

Are they insane? I mean sure, they can probably sell some copies because of te licence but they're also alienating their entire fanbase. No fan of their games will buy a game based on a crappy disney-licence. I want my graet Bethesda-story. I don't care if it's Sea Dogs II in new clothes. As a self-respecting gamer I will not buy any movie tie-ins. They makes games look like bybroducts and not something that's good in their own right. What's next? Will TES IV become "Little princess and the happy pony"? They really should know better now that Morrowind did so great despite being a pretty hardcore RPG. Put a "from the makers of Morrowind"-tag on SD2 and they could have had both good sales and self-respect. If this was any other company I wouldn't have been surprised but being Bethesda, a company known for bringing gaming forward, I am truly and deeply dissapointed. I expected better from them.

There's no point whinging but...

I had been wondering about the lack of real updates (other than screenshots). I have my doubts that development can be successfully suspended and restarted some time later, so I will mentally move Sea Dogs into the "vapourware" category along with Duke Nuke'Em.

whoa, didn't expect this kind of treatment from Bethesda (although, if anyone remebers the X-com Dreamland ordeal... I wouldn't be surprised)

I think an honest explanation is in order if they care about their fans at all, not this marketing bullshit

Bluesnews has compared screenshots between the two and found them to be identical, so there's little doubt it's Sea Dogs repackaged.

This is good news, provided Disney doesn't require changes to sanitise it for their license.

Given the screenshots: yes, this seems to be the same game. I can only speculate that they hope to sell more copies due to cross marketing with the Disney license.

Let me tell you something about the history of this newsbit: I first added the new game to our database and published the newsbit. Then I had a look at the screenshots we were provided a link for from Bethesda. Then I deleted the newsbit and just renamed the Sea Dogs 2 entry in our database to Pirate of the Caribbean. Should tell you something, shouldn't it. Pete wrote to us:

If it's still the same game, or very similiar but the title sound different, then why we need complaining here? The game will still come out for PC, only it now include Xbox and PS2. Or i'm missing something here?.

Because the sentence "The development of Sea Dogs II has been suspended and that title will not be released this year" makes it sound like Pirates is a different game that they dropped Sea Dogs to concentrate on. It took a few minutes to piece together that it's really the same. In the end it's probably not a big deal but the press release deliberately tries to hide this fact.

To my best knowlegde, Akella is still the developer. For legal reasons Bethsoft can't say what I say now: Pirates of the Caribbean Sea is the same developer, same engine, same general gameplay, same setting, same atmosphere. It might be that the characters will reflect the movie, somehow, but in reality, you should get the game you were waiting for (and I was waiting for),

okay Rend, seems you think it's the same game, with a new title... I hope so too !

On the Akella website, they are still talking about Sea Dogs II...
Just sent an Email to Akella to clarify. Will let you know if I get an answer...

first Gothic 2 which becomes vaporous, now, Sea Dogs II...
