An interesting question. I'm sure we'll have a good discussion on this.

Well, personally, I think life is a time for us as individuals to grow up. Not just physically but also mentally and spiritually. I do believe that we lived in a sort of 'pre-existance' with God and this life is basically our proving ground. We came here to learn, grow, mature and gain an appreciation for the gift of life. Sure, it isn't all cake and ice cream, but then how would you grow and learn? How could you feel anything good if you never felt anything bad? Yeah, I don't like pain and suffering, but that's a price I'll pay if I can feel joy and happiness. You can't really have one without the other. You cannot grow and learn without adversity. There would be no way to prove yourself if adversity did not exist. If there was no adversity, then what would be the point?

Just my 2 cents.

It might be weird, but I think we are created and served as an experiment for an advanced being. The specie might have some purposes to test how we live and associate with the rest of the universe, or they just do it for entertainment. We are so tiny compared to the universe!

val your idea sounds similar to the morman belief. man those guys are weird! i try to keep an open mind about most religions and things, but the morman religion is a travesty IMO. just my opinion.

anyway, i think that God, after creating the universe and world and junk, decided to add a little spice to this corner of the galaxy. from an ocean or something, somewhere on the planet, little amoebas were formed. they grew and adapted until finally they were multi-celled organisms. after more growing and adapting, some of them became fish. a few of the fish grew legs and whatnot, and over a looooooooooooong period of time, became monkeys (or apes, i forget which ) over a looooooooooooooong period of time, some of the monkeys grew into other things until we had people. we're still growing and adapting. who knows what tommorrow will bring....

I think all of you overshot the question, I think he is asking for our location and our reasons for being here.

sauron, don't you think that Biggyd should know his location? His second question seems to be philosophic to me.

We are here because God creates us. No idea with "where did we come from" nor "where will we go to".

ok how about the fact that their waiting for the "third coming"? or that they think that black people are the devil's people? or that they think that Jesus and satan are brothers? or that they think each race will have their own planets in heaven? or that they think that people become gods when they die? seems pretty weird to me....

Apparently you don't know as much about the Mormon religion as you think you know LonePaladin. I've been around them my entire life and I'm well versed in their religion. They aren't waiting for any 'third coming'. They do not believe that black people are the 'devil's people'. I know a few Mormons who are black and they certainly don't think they are the 'devil's people'. They believe they are children of God just like everybody in the Mormon religion. They do believe that everyone is a child of God, that includes Jesus and Satan, but Satan was cast out when he rebelled. And where did you hear that they think each race will have their own planet? That's a load of crap. They believe that when they get to heaven, if they are worthy, then they can live with God and be like Him. If being like Him means being a God, then that's the one thing you've got right.

Now, can we dispense with the religion bashing? This is supposed to be a philisophical discussion.

i don't recall bashing any religion. granted i said mormans are weird, but based on what i know they are. i'm trying to remain objective and kind and whatever, but under the circumstances i'm afraid i can't.

all i know about mormans is what they showed me in school. we watched this whole video on mormans. it said that they believed Jesus returned to earth somewhere in america. now if he came once in 6 BC (Christmas) and then supposedly again in america (book of morman), and of course he will again at the end of the world, wouldn't that add up to three? the same video also said that according to the book of morman, Jesus and satan were brothers, like actual brothers, not brothers like everyone is related through God. both of them wanted to be the messiah, but satan wanted to do it by teaching the people how to be selfish or something like that. promoting self....i dunno something to that effect. so half the angels followed Jesus, and went down to earth as white people, and the others followed satan and became black people. it (the same video here) said that they believed heaven will be divided into different areas (or planets) for the different races. i don't remember it exactly but they said that when people die they will go and become gods.

now to reiterrate, i heard all of this on a video i was shown in school. don't ask me why they showed it, but they did and it's become the basis of my understanding of the morman religion. now if this was the only thing you'd ever heard of a religion, wouldn't you agree that you might label them as "weird"? now if what that video said isn't right, tell me. i'd hate to go around with the wrong impression on a stateful of people. depending on who made the video, it could have been totally biased. for all i know the Catholic Church made it to make the mormans seem less attractive and stop people from converting to protestantism.

in any event, i look forward to your response.

If that was all I knew, then yes I'd think it's wierd LonePaladin.
That video is wrong. After Christ died and was resurrected they believe he appeared to the people living here in the Americas, which was shortly after leaving his disciples in the land of Jeruselum. So basically, they lump that together with his first coming.
Basically, they believe that Satan wanted all the glory of saving mankind. His plan was to not allow people free will. They'd all be forced to choose the 'right path'. Christ wanted people to choose what they were going to do, whether they choose to follow him and be saved through his atonement or not. God went with Christ's plan as it states in the Bible. Then Satan rebelled. Satan and his followers were cast out and went to hell basically. All those who didn't rebel will come down and be born on Earth. Whether they are black, white, red, or purple with pink pocka-dots, they are all children of God.
As far as the 'planet thing' goes, that's total junk. It's a botched misinterpretation of the 'Plan of Salvation'. Prepare for long-winded explanation: Basically, they believe there is a pre-existance where we all live before coming to Earth. So, we come to the Earth and are born and forget everything we knew up in heaven. We live our lives (good or bad) then die. Now, while everyone is sitting around waiting for their final judgement they need a place to sit. So there is 'Paradise' and the 'Spirit Prison'. Paradise is where Christ's true believers go and Spirit Prison is where everyone else ends up. Now in this prison people have the chance to gain a belief in Christ. After all, not everyone who has lived a good life has heard of Christ but that doesn't mean they should go to Hell right? So here's their chance. Then when the world ends and the final judgement comes everyone is resurrected then judged. After this judgement there are three different kingdoms (levels) in heaven that people can go to. There's the Celestial kingdom (this is where God, Jesus, prophets, and good people who believe in Christ and have repented go to live), then there is the Terrestial kingdom (people here lived an overall good life but they didn't repent for all of their mistakes), then there is the Telestial kingdom ( (my spelling is probably atrocious here) this is where people who commited mortal sins but repented go (at least that's my understanding of it) ).
Then there is 'Outer Darkeness' which is the absense of God and light and good. This is where Satan and his followers are. Anyone who denies Christ ends up there because at that point they are a follower of Satan and are cast out like he is.
They have a nice little diagram they use to explain all of this. It makes it easier but I can't seem to find the thing. Granted, I'm no expert, but this is what I have learned about what they believe. They also have the Articles of Faith which breaks down their basic beliefs:
1 We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.

2 We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.

3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

5 We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.

6 We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.

7 We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.

8 We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

9 We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

10 We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.

11 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

12 We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

13 We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

That's the best explaination of their beliefs I can refer you to besides the Book of Mormon itself.
I apologize for the bashing comment. I just feel the need to rise to the defense of a religion if I hear someone saying something false about it when I know it's not true. Just like I don't care for the way the media is treating the scandel that's going on the Catholic church right now. Whether it's Judism, Islam, Buddahism or Christianity (or whatever), I don't like people who feel the need to make fun of, bash or spread rumors about them. Pet peev I guess.
And now that I have given myself carpal tunnel typing all of this I'll hit the submit button now.

thank you, val. sorry you got a carpal tunnel

well maybe i wasn't paying all that much attention to the video... and maybe i warped some of what i saw to match the rumors i'd heard... and maybe over the course of time, the mix of lies and truth over what the mormans believe sort of became one... my sincerest apologies. in any event, even though i know what they believe for certain now, i still think that religion is a travesty of Christianity. i'm sorry if you take offense from that, but i am entitled to my opinion, which isn't liable to change. but i am willing to admit that the mormans themselves are perfectly nice people, and i'll be sure to remember this thread the next time my friend derrek says "man those mormans are [i]weird[/i!" after all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and i'm sure to many people the Catholic Church is just plain wacky.

the media is promoting the wrong image of us though. it would also seem that many people have the wrong impression of mormans. i'm sorry i was ever one of those people, val.

from now on i'll stick to slandering masons!
