View distance in ultima 9 |
|
I just picked up my copy of ultima 9 to give it a second try, the first time I tried to play it back in the day my tnt2 couldn't handle it(and I hit a show-stoper early). It seems my 9800 pro is doing a better job of it this time, in fact its doing such a good job that with everything maxed and AA and AF turned all the way up from windows I still get no slowdown. Crashes galore? Yes, but no slowdown.
So I was wondering, is there a way to turn the view distance up past what the in game menu allows?
I've already tried screwing with Options.ini and changing the lines:
; Clipping planes
FarClippingPlaneDistance=*
MiddleClippingPlaneDistance=*
to give myself a boost, but although it does extend the distance which I can see grey fogged-out polygons there are no textures past the normal distance. I assumed it was possible because of these old screenshots you may remember from the launch of the game:

While I'm waiting for help on this I have a new problem.
Ok, so I drank a purple potion in wrong and I stayed invisible. Other characters can see me, the avatar just appears see-through at all times. Drinking another purple potion does nothing. |

I'm clueless. Great game though. Might even resurrect it from my closet and give it another go. |

I just started playing this again myself and would also like to know if there's any way to change the distance. It's kinda getting on my nerves that I can't see anything past 20 feet... |

I've got the unofficial patch and have turned the view distance up to maximum in the settings (in the journal). I find it's more than enough to see everything nearby. |

Yes, you can turn view distance far than menu allows.
To do so, add these lines after [ENGINE TUNING COMMANDS] to your 'Default.kmp' file in Ultima IX directory:
CTRL+F1 = clipping_plane_in
CTRL+F2 = clipping_plane_out
CTRL+\ = clipping_plane_reset
CTRL+SHIFT+F1 = middle_plane_in
CTRL+SHIFT+F2 = middle_plane_out
CTRL+SHIFT+\ = middle_plane_reset
Now by pressing CTRL+F2 in game you can increase landscape view distance, and by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+F2 you can increase objects view distance.
It's buggy, and it resets every time you load game, or even weather changes
But it works!
Oh, and for better visual quality you'll have to tweak your 'Options.ini' file.
Just look at screenshot i've made in 2000 on my brand new P III 667+128Mb RAM+ATI Rage 128 Pro 32 Mb:

Now you can see even Yew's trees from the center of Britan!
And... rendering of all objects on these image has taken about 5 MINUTES!
P.S. Sorry for my english. Hope you'll understand it
