Fill the 5 litre bottle, then use that bottle to fill the 3 litre one. Then you'll have two litres.

That's from Die hard
If you fill 3 litres up to the top then pour it into the 5 litre bottle then fill the 3 litre bottle up again and pour what you can into the 5 litre bottle then your left with 1 litre in the 3 litre bottle, empty the 5 litre bottle and pour the contents of the 3 litre bottle into the 5 liter bottle, then simply fill up the 3 litre bottle again and pour that into the 5 litre bottle and hey presto 4 litres _________________ R.I.P "Dimebag" Darrell Lance Abbott

Well, I'd feel bad about ripping off Tolkien, or some game, so I'll go for a bit of a math problem:
A man goes to the countryside, and sees a farm with a lot of children outside. He asks one of the boys how much brothers and sisters he has, and he answers: "I've got as much brothers, as sisters". Then the man asks a girl the same question and she says: "I've got twice as much brothers as I do sisters". How many boys and girls are there?
(btw, sorry for the poor wording. I'm not a native speaker and I had to translate. ) _________________ Join the RPGDot Shadows |

Boys = 4 girls = 3
but I am not 100% sure about it _________________ Want to become a vampire? a warrior in the battle between vampires and werewolves?

I think that there are 4 boys and 3 girls, since a boy (of the 4 brothers) would have
quote:
as many brothers as sisters
i.e - 3, and a girl (of the 3 sisters) would have
quote:
twice as many brothers as sisters
ie. 2x2=4. |

Yes, you are correct. Well done! Lets try again... I hope you understand what I mean:
You have 6 metal balls, all but one the same weight, and a way to, err.. measure them (It's the thing where you can put something on one side, and something else on the other, and it shows if the two sides are equal, or if one weights more than the other. Hope that makes sense. Oh, and I'd really appreciate it if you could tell me what it's called. ). Anyway, how do you find the odd ball, that hasn't got the same weight, in 3 measurements? _________________ Join the RPGDot Shadows |

Measurement 1. Begin by weighing 4 balls, two on each side.
If the scale is balanced:
-You can eliminate all four balls on the scale they are equal.
Measurement 2 & 3. Measure the remaining two balls on at a time against only one of the first for balls. You are looking for the ball that imbalances the scale.
If the scale is unbalanced:
-You can eliminate the two balls you did not measure, they are equal.
-Remove one ball from each side and place it in front of the plate you took it off of.
Measurement 2. Measure the two balls left on the scale.
If the scale is now balanced you know that the balls you removed created the imbalance.
Measurement 3. Measure any one of the balls under the plates against any one of the balls left on the scale. If the new ball creates an imbalance it is the one you are looking for. If the scale is still balanced the other ball is the one your are looking for.
If the scale is still imbalanced, you know that the two balls you removed are also balanced and the one of the balls on the scale created the imbalance. Mark one of the balls on the scale 'A' and mark the other 'B'
Measurement 3. Measure one of the balls you know is equal against either A or B. If the scale is imbalanced you know the marked ball still on the scale is the uneven one. If the scale is imbalanced you know the marked ball not on the scale is the uneven one.
VPeric or anyone else, I am curious to know how you would have done it? _________________ Always with you what can not be done. Hear you nothing that I say? - Master Yoda
