Thought I'd post a topic here to try and liven the place up.
Anyway, I think the romances in the game were a good idea to add some depth to the story.
But...
I was a little disappointed that Anomen was the only romance NPC for a female protagonist, but I understand that time was limited and it was difficult for them to impliment the romances. But still, he was a whiney little arrogant jerk who annoyed the hell out of me. Did they think a woman would be attracted to that type of guy (at least any woman with a brain)? I was tempted to kick his butt more than once.
Then, there were the female NPCs for the male protagonist.
1. Aerie - cons: whiny, pro: sweet/innocent good person.
2. Jaheria - cons: bossy/insulting/indecisive about her feelings, pros: sincere/more mature.
3. Viconia - cons: tease/flirt/witch with 'b' instead of the 'w', pro: um...hmm...I can't think of anything at the moment.
I was very tempted to use the shut the hell up responses while playing. Especially when I was in the middle of a fight or important script. Some of the conversations were pretty good and made you think about your character's actions and development. Like when Jaheria asks if you enjoy killing and if you can control your heritage. Did you guys find any of them appealing? Would you date someone like that in real life?
Agree, disagree with my assessments?

I played through all the romances. No, I don't think I'd like a woman like any of them in real life. My wife is nothing like any of them, that's for sure... though she's not too far from a composite of the innocence and good nature of Aerie mixed in with the maturity and decisiveness of Jaheira, I suppose.

Viconia was witty and sarcastic. I can admire that. But ultimately she contributed little to a relationship.

Anomen... heh. I alway felt sorry for the female PCs. If it wasn't for his unmatched turning abilities, I'd never use him. I always tell him to shut up until he's knighted.

Jaheira is the most normal one, and she acts strange due to the loss of her husbond, Khalid.

She wasn't as "strange" in BG1, but then again, you weren't being romantic with her back then either.

Face it, women didn't have too much choice

Minsc - guy who was hit one too many times in the head, on top of that he talking to hamster.
Yoshimo - dies, need I say more?
Anomen - already discussed
Korgan - too short
Volygar - hmm??
Cernd - escaped from pregnant wife, hello?
Haerdalis - this is a possibility.
Edwin - I can't imagine any woman standing him, although I bet the conversation would be hilarious
Jan - another midget
Keldorn - married

I agree, Valygar and Haer Dalis would have been good choices to add. It would have been hilarious to hear how your character could react to Edwin's "change". That definately would have been fun.

Valygar says flat out at one point that he doesn't want any sort of romance in his life because love in his family can only end in pain and tragedy. He's determined to let his cursed bloodline die with him. Changing his mind seems like a good possibility for a story, I suppose.

Edwin sees women like he sees magic items. Something to be used until it runs out of charges then discarded. More than that, he's a Red Wizard and thoroughly evil to boot.

Haer'daelis is a flirt. For a doomguard, he's pretty chipper. Eventually I killed him because he challenged me to a duel for Aerie's affections. She didn't like that much so when I reloaded I just dumped him first. He's not THAT hot.

That why only an evil, back-stabbed just like him, protagonist would get involved with him. He'd get bored with a goody-goody. And you have to admit, the transformation sequence would have been great.

If you have two 'evil' people in a romance, it's not much of a 'romance'. Unless they have soft spots in their evil hearts for each other... which, in Edwins case, wouldn't make much sense. He's irredeemable, and I was glad to read about what happened to him after Throne of Bhaal.

Yes... the transformation sequence could have been a lot of fun. But it was anyways.

I don't know. All this NPC romance sounds a bit queer to me. After all, they're just computer programs. They don't provide qualities that you look for in a soul mate, since conversation with them is choice-based, they have very little (if any) autonomous will, etc, etc. Sure, they're nice side stories, though, but they don't seem fleshed-out to me.

The romances also don't seem to take any account of what's happening around you as well, which was a bit annoying, as well....

All in all, it's hard to compare characters in a book or computer game to real people. It feels slightly sick to me, don't know why.

However, I think short people should have options too. Can't you pick races for your character?

Of course you can! Being a dwarf or a halfling is as fun as any other character!

One of the best fighters in the game is called Mazzy and she is a halfling. A pretty funny one as well!

Well, the romances makes this game seem more "realistic", but I hate it when Jaheira starts to talk to you about Khalid in the middle of a fight, and so on.

Think about it from the other end? What would you do if your girlfriend/wife was a Demigod? You'd probably make damn sure that you do the dishes, at least. And you'd not complain while you do it.

Good point! Very good point indeed! I'd clean the house, do the dishes/laundry and so on with a big smile on my face!

hey i bought the game a few days ago. quick question: is the entire game spent in pursuit of imoen? i read this thread before i bought the game, and i was thinking about the romances at the beginning. i thought "well since imoen and i got the whole childhood thing going on, i'll start being reeeeeeeaaaaaaaaal nice to her." but then she gets arrested and i want to know if i should make my move on jaheira or not. if imoen dies, don't tell me, just tell me who to be all boyfriendy to.

You chase after Imoen until Chapter 4, then you chase after Irenicus.

There are 4 possible romance characters. I listed them in my first post: Aerie (easy), Jaheira (medium), Viconia (hard), then there is Anomen for a female main character.

No, but there are cheats for instant kills, leveling, getting items or gold, etc.
