yeah yeah what are those coins for? i was thinkin maybe they are those little chocolates wrapped in gold tin foil? no? at least you could eat those things, these are just frickin useless |

Yup useless. They must of wanted to use them for something then cut them out, Its realalistic though that coins should be useless cause they have no worth in a society that revolves around ore. |

The coins is a ironic (very funny) red herring. It really make you realize that real coin have no value within the barrier.
There are similiar jokes in Fallout and Fallout 2.

In Fallout 1, Capsules is useful. In Fallout 2 they are replaced with real money. Thats the point
