You could check your stats, Dex is the damage you do added to the bow for each shot and bow skill is the RANGE you shoot (if I recall) so stand next to a tree 10 foot away with a skill of more than 10 you should hit it.
Now move back 20 feet with a skill of 20 or more and you should hit it.
If you press and release the fire button quickly the arrow will basicly just fall out of the bow a few feet, hold the fire button for 2-5 seconds then release for most power if I recall, arrows are only a gold each cheaper than mana (per point).
There are many problems with the bow the aiming systems SUCKS (did I say that out loud ) iin crowds you CANT focus on the target you want to unless use autoaim (lame aimbot) and if you do it turns your body as the AI forces you to turn your back to others in the crowd there by opening up your back to numerous free attacks for the enemy.
If your going to have to attack a crowd try to get or run to (ie PULL =shoot into crowd ) and climb a rock so they cant get to you, also using speed potions before you try to pull large from large powerful crowds like Orcs.
The most distance you can shoot with a bow is a discusting 100 feet (ie skill 100) it is clearly a rape (yeah im bitter ) by the developers, by contrast you can accuratly, ie hit every time if the enemy is still with a fire arrow spell at almost twice the distance.
If you would perfer a more accurate/fair distance, I worked it out (not scientificly or anything) distance is nutered by about 50% so for every skill point you buy you basicly give yourself another free with console commands, thou its up to you.
If its your first time I suggest not using the codes but also NOT focusing soliy on the bow.
If you really like to use the bow (i do ) just dont expect it to work flawlessly, its far from it.
Its a fantastic game even considering its flaws like inventory, controls and bow aiming.

My words exatly!

In gothic it is better to be a fighter or a magic user or a hybrid of those.Bows and xbows have allways let me down as they feel so dull and involve a little from the player..HArdly this thing is mentioned anywhere, but gotta agree that bows and xbows need a whole lot of improvment for gothic3.
