Yes, it is quite an interesting article. I have another reason I do not like the pursuit of realistic graphics in games. I am not ashamed to admit that I play games to escape from so-called reality. I want the graphics in my games to look otherworldly, so that I can feel immersed in a world far from this one. I'd prefer that developers spend their time on the story, characters, and gameplay than on the eye candy. But "the masses" are easily hoodwinked by visual spectacle, so I don't think we'll see a change in direction any time soon.

I think the article is right, the graphics are really going good and i think this isn't a bad thing.

The "Uncanny Valley" idea has been thrown around quite a bit on CG message boards since the Final Fantasy movie and the more recent trailers from Polar Express. I think that, as we come closer to a series of formulas for creating utterly realistic beings, there will be a counter movement toward surreal and stylized animation, just as there was in painting after the Renaissance.

My experiments with creating realistic 3D humans have been touch-and-go. I would *like* to be good enough, (and have the huge amount of time necessary), to create a very very realistic character, but given the choice I would *rather* create 'toon style stuff. Hopefully expertise in one type of art will lead to a greater understanding of the other.

Exactly same here. I do not want absolutely realistic graphics.

I personaly am worried about when they finaly DO get it right, and you cant tell the difference between a CGI character and a real Actor.

I think that will ruin a lot of the games for me, I dont know about you but I am most likely gonna feel very sick when playing first person shooters with that level of detail.

Not because of the gore, but because of the moral dilema of shooting someone like that.

If they act 100% realistic, who's to say they are not alive?

An interesting article .. but mostly for what it implies about human perceptions. It is scary to me that as one approaches the 'valley' there is a clear cut off where discomfort grows very quickly.

Why is it that our brains try to warp the mostly non human to human, but then when the approximation gets too good flip it around and the brain will only focus on the short comings?

Does this mean that we are all hard wired to be pessimists? Or is there some deeper survival trait at work here? I am sure the UFO-Pyramid conspirists would have a field day with that suggestion!
