Gothic 2 voices

There's probably no way I'm not going to come off as sounding really pretentious and absurd by asking this, but here goes.

Can I get the German voices into my English Gothic 2?

While still retaining the English subtitles?(I don't speak German)

The reason I'm asking this is because I've played both the German demo with the English subtitles patch as well as the English version of Gothic 2. Which means I've heard the game in both voices.

And after playing the English version for the first time today, I've got to say that the voices don't measure up IMHO. The english voice actors don't sound authentic at all.

Whereas German Vino and the other farmhands sounded suitably like gruff salt of the earth farmers, their English counterparts sound like sniveling dolts. While listening to the German ones you sort of respected them for thier grudging dislike of the King and grim acceptance of the inevitable orc attack. In the English version you don't.

German Lothar was voiced by a 40-something who sounded naturally like an authoratative, bigoted military pinhead. His single-minded anger over your mentioning about the Dragons and the Eye of Innos seemed real, and you really dislike him for his closed-mindedness. The English actor sounds much younger, and he doesn't sound nearly as effective. I disliked him as well, but for totally different reasons.

I could metion a few others, but you get my point. Are there any players who could tell me if it can be done?

How do you want to exchange 9 hours of speech? What you want is essentially a German version with English subtitles.

The problem is that G2 is so successful here that it´s still sold for full price one year after release. Gothic 1 retail costs only 10 EUR, G2 still 40. It´s on position 14 in the charts.

...can one swap the speech files from a german copy with the files from the english copy that have already been installed? do you think that would work? cause i've been thinking about it for some time for the exact same reason as Dogar.

It´s worth a try. The two files are 1.1 GB big.

Yup, it works! I replaced the english voices files today with the ones from the German demo. You get German voices in whichever places the demo featured.

Which means you'd have to pay for a copy of the German version. Or get someone to host the 1.1GB sounds files.

Lemon: This is certainly illegal, so if you want to do it, I wouldn't discuss it on the Internet.

Dogar: I certainly agree that the English voice acting is... problematic... in places (a random mix of regional dialects being the chief weirdness. Shouldn't folks from the same area all have the same accent?). Just a note, though: I've noticed that people frequently prefer to hear computer game voices in a language other than their own; I suspect that this may be partly due to the fact that we are sensitive to the social connotations of small phonological variations in our own language, but not necessarily in other languages.

I've thought of the same thing myself Srikandi, and while I agree that I may dislike the English voices because I'm acutely aware of English vocal variations while not aware in the case of the German ones, I still feel I can tell the difference between suitable charcter acting and off-kilter character voices.

Another example is Bartok, the hunter. The English voice actors sounds soft-hearted and effeminate, not the kind of guy who hunts wild animals for a living, the German Bartok sounds tough and seasoned, more like an actual hunter.

I suppose if I said that the way German Bartok said "Oh shit, that was an Orc!" sounded more authentic than the way the English Bartok said it, you could say it was because of my inability to detect German phonological variations. But that doesn't change the obvious fact that one voice actor sounds tough and suitable for the role while the other sounds wimpy and unsuitable. This goes for a lot of the other English voices actors IMHO.

As for the legality issue, I wouldn't think that the transfer of sounds files would be an issue to get all upset about. It's hardly serious piracy. Though I suppose others would think different.

I have to admit

You can't understand how much it hurts me to say this because I love gothic so darn much but man, one of the first guards you meet at the gate of khorinis sounds like a brother from downtown Detriot, Michigan. and one of the inkeepers sounds like someone from the Bronks. It sure does give the impression that khorinis is a melting pot full of diveristy but a diversity thats rooted in North America 2003, not exactly a medevil fantasy land

As far as the quality of voices,I think they are superb, even though I can tell the same person voices many other characters in the game.

Ouch that hurt.

The voices are rather blah, but I can live with it. :p

Subtitles

Why bother with English voice acting at all? Foreign language films don't dub over the actors with English voice recordings do they? They'd be laughed out of the cinema if they were so why should games differ? It would save the developer's money to keep the game in its native language and then provide subtitles for all the different markets. Just a thought.

This certainly doesn't follow the thread of conversation, but I just wanted to add my two cents. I agree completely with the weird-voices thing! There are really only a few good ones, in my opinion. I love Nagur's - he's really creepy! - and Niclas, the hunter by the lighthouse, is great, too. So's Thorben, and Bosper. They're the only ones that make me want to stop and hear them speak, versus just skipping the subtitles. Pyrokar and the Fire Mages are good, too.

But what really, really freaks me out is the new Diego! He's got a sort of southern-accent thing going on. Not that that's horrible, or anything - I'm just not used to it with him! His other voice had a sort of dry wit to it, but this one is just weird.
