J.E. Sawyer resigns as Lead Designer at Black Isle Studios

"I figured I'd post this here before DAC and NMA got the scoop! I am resigning from my position as lead designer at Black Isle Studios. I will not discuss those reasons here, but I will state that they are my reasons. I apologize to those who may be disappointed by my decision and congratulate those who rejoice at it. My last day will be November 21st.

From this point forward, I will not be discussing any aspect of Black Isle Studios projects that may be currently in development."

That's the statement J.E. Sawyer made on the Interplay Forums today. Bad news for BIS and Interplay - but does it take me any wonder? No. Thanks to Petr for being the first one to point us to this posting on the forums

*sigh*

I have/had high hopes for Fallout 3 and despite some controversial choices felt that JE was on top of it.

Several times he's commented on whether he'd join team mates who had left by saying that Fallout 3 was the game he'd always dreamed of working on.

I wonder what happened to that dream?

I'd say: They didn't get things right lately, did they?

Warning: Unpopular comment ahead...

If I were J.E. Sawyer, I'd congratulate myself and rejoice in my decision to leave a company that has signed its name to the Infinity engine .

True. Everything has been a fiasco for a long time from cancelled projects to distribution disputes to dubious developments.

I guess I had some (misguided?) hope that FO3 would make it's way through the quagmire.

Good luck J.E.!

This wasn`t unexpected to a few people from the fansites. It could happen at any time. I believe he had strong reasons to do it, and i wish him all the best.

In what this may affect Fallout3 it`s still too soon to have a clear picture, since it was somehow expected i suppose things were taken care to prepare his departure, and the game may not suffer much from it.

But with Interplay we never know.

What with the way Interplay has been handling games lately, I don't blame JE. I hope FO3 is not affected by this.

I don't think Fallout 3 will be affected. The part Josh was working on is nearly complete.

That is a surprise. I thought if Josh wanted to leave BIS he would have done quite long ago, around the time Feargus and MCA leaving BIS.

I always like to read opinions and comments from game developer in forums, since we not always have rather open and continuous dialogs between gamers and game developers. Now the forums at Interplay is not the same anymore without Josh, where he was active.

I can't wait new forums to open at Obsidian, Flagship Studios, and InXile.
Wonder whether Josh would be working at one of the company above, or move to Bioware, Troika, Ion Storm?...

Yep

Sounds like a conflict over Fallout 3. I bet BI is going to screw it up royally and JE finally had and enough and didn't want his name attached to it.
Good on him if that's the case.
I think BI may as well fold, and sell the FO rights to a good developer. Maybe Troika. I'd like to see Tim Cain have a crack at the FO universe once more.

Definitely a sad day for BIS. There goes the last of the really knowledgeable and respected people working there. I'm not disparaging those still there, but Josh was the last of what I call the old crew who brought us some of my favourite games.
