i'm getting this on startup of the demo and full game, same as the dood up there ^^^, gonna try installing the 1.08h patch, then i'll contact PB, but any specific help to this problem would be much appreciated.
(graphics card = voodoo 3500 tv, all the other specs meet the minimum requirements, is there a problem with the 3500 or....)

Your Voodoo3 only has 16MB, this can be problematic. Maybe another driver version and an reinstalled DirectX8.0 will help. Generally speaking the problems with V3 cards were solved a long time ago.
Installing patch 1.08h over the release version (1.08j) sounds rather illogical. 1.08k could be worth a try. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

You cannot seriously advice us to reinstall directx8.0.
8.1 is needed for several games and it is the newest update.
We need a patch for playing Gothic with directx8.1
By programming the game they should have expected that there will come a newer directx.
So I want my money back. |

OK, I'll try to give some nerdy advice.
what the game does:
1)search in ur driver list after ur current video card.(by counting)
2)match it with directx (match the count with the list in directx)
3)initialize card with directx commands.
4)handle the main window in windows (main window is this one
u always see), makes the gothic menu the main window and
shuffel the former to the back.
problems:
*. 1) doesn' match 2) -> uninstall directx, uninstall all video drivers
................................... if u've got another 3d chip on ur motherboard
................................... disable it in bios. Reinstall drivers, update drivers
....................................reinstall directx, upgrade directx, install gothic
hint: try to have only one 3d hardware chip running on ur system
*. 3) not ok -> compatibility of directx, try another directx? just uninstall
......................it and reinstall it, check ur card drivers.
*. 4) not ok -> play with ur main screen resolution, refresh rate, screen
..................... saver, background programs (shut down as many as u can).
......................check ur 'in game' card settings (aperture size etc), check ur
......................windows shell (is it explorer ?), try to shut off active desktop
......................especially if ur constantly online...... try anything who could
.....................avoid to place the game screen on foreground. Windows
.....................media player won't for instance go to the background, check
..................... ur video codecs also.
I'd love to give more advise..but I should see ur machine therefore.
