Do NPC's really have schedules in Gothic 2?

In gothic 1 NPC's really had schedules. However, I notice in Gothic 2 that many NPC's are in the same position doing the same thing day or night? What gives?

Yeah, they're pretty static. But, to be optimistic, it's for the better.

Take V-man-in-the-City for instance. If you don't know his schedule, it's difficult to find him. Imagine if every NPC was like that.
You'd end up spending 1/3 of your total game time asking around for where a person is.

Again, just being optimistic.

Yes, they do! They definitely do...
...without giving much away there are certain quests that cannot be completed without knowing the daily routines of certain NPCs.

Of course some guards will patrol the same are in the city day and night, but they are getting paid for that so no problem!

Yes, there are some standard schedules. Most people will go home to get some sleep at night. Or sit down at camp fires to chat with other people or play some music. It usually makes sense, e.g. merchants will leave the market place at night etc. Some characters stay at the same place during daytime, others walk/work around within a certain area. That's ok, because if you need to find a specific character for whatever reason you don't want to check the whole town or even island everytime. It still feels notably less static than the approach in many other RPGs.
