Character diversification or same ol' same ol'

When you're playing an RPG do you play the same type of character all the time, or do you choose something different depending on the game or your mood?
Where I'm able to choose my character I always play a Thief / Rogue / Assassin-type. Rather Freudian I guess I like to poke about (lockpick), be almost invisible (sneak) and get the 'jump' on an enemy (backstab), but I rarely pickpocket (I don't know why). I'd like to use magic - but it's so dammed difficult to figure out.
I'm interested in other people's choice of characters.

Yeah, it depends on the game and the mood. I myself prefer a paladin-type brute... . But in some games, like Morrowind, I play "all in one" character.

Mostly Wizards. With religious obertones if possible, but not clerics. Inquisitors Witchhunter in Morrowind was my first choice immediately when I saw it in the list, and I roleplayed as devoted Dunmer witchhunter-inquisitor all the game. Now in Lionheart (about 50% finished) I joined Holy Inquisition without hesitation and was happy to chat with Torquemada in his cellars

Magic should serve the higher goal, I guess

I guess you've played 'Inquisior' and 'Inquisition' then? I have Inquisition - it's a bit difficult to get the hang of, but I'll get there - it's by Wanadoo, same company that made Mistmare, I stuck with that and ended up loving it. I think also Grimore is along those lines too, isn't it?

Nope I haven't Well, being inquisitor is in no way my 'idee fixe' so a mere good-old mage will usually do just fine. But I dont' even know what those games are. Please, enlighten me.

Inquisition is reviewed here; http://www.actiontrip.com/reviews/inquisition.phtml There's often a copy for sale on eBay UK.
and there's a bit in the RPGdot in the Gamas Database about Inquisitor.

Thanx, Sherrin! I was not excited by Inquisition, as I don't like action games in general, but I read RPGDot preview of Inquisitor and watched some screenshots - I think this game will be worth look at when it is released. Its minus is that its an action-RPG again... And I'm playing Lionheart right now See my problem?

For single player CRPGs, I will usually make a character that is 'thief' heavy, the first time around. Mainly because I like finding traps, opening chests and doors, sneaking and other 'helpful' skills. Usually playing thief characters is the easiest way through the game. Playing a thief character, of all the templates, usually lets you experience the most content. If I really like the game and decide to replay it, I will pick some other template. Which one, depends on what I deemed to be most interesting the first time around.

I always play a mage of some sort. In the BG series I played a mage/thief multi so I could open locks and disarm traps. That works well if you have a tank character along with you. In none fantasy genres, I go straight power tank blasting everything in sight. Party games are a little different, where balance is the key.

I always make sure I have some thieving skills in my character or thru a henchman. Most times, it seems my first reaction is to play a tank with some locks-n-traps skills, or a combat-heavy healer.

I really like using ranged characters the best, and often times try and get using a bow or crossbow pretty quick. It has always given me greater satisfaction to rarely ever get hit, it's more realistic. Saves alot of coin on repairs as well. Some games tho, it just doesnt pay to use a bow unfortunately

I like the idea of playing a ranged weapons user and or a sneaky type, but I find they tend to die too quickly for my tastes *grin*

So I usually fall back on the tank type with some lock skills and some healing ... or a D&D ranger. I like them since they are still able to go toe to toe with most badies, but can sneak around a bit, and using the 3.5 rules appear to make pretty formidable archers.

It really depends on the system and how comfortable I am with the commands and controls.

i also like to be a thief, but a rare kind of thief.
i try to stay on the good side, and still steal stuff from the 'good' people.
i also prefer not to pickpocket, i just don't like it .
mostly i'm sort of this:
thief (lockpicker, killer)
ranged attack (Xbow)
lives in the wild (forest)

Raw melee warrior, SOMETIMES a bard. Those are the usual first characters I make. But I usually play around a bit with all kinds after a while.

I like to play heavy-duty melee characters in CRPGs, and if possible with a good dose of thiefly and survival skills. I almost never use magic or use skills that may be closely related to a wizard(such as alchemy) even when it's clearly a bad idea to do so(such as in Arx Fatalis, I only used the create fire and teleport spells in the whole game).
