The Compiled Top RPGs of All Time (voted for by you!)

Hey all, I’ve just completed the compilation of everyone’s Top Ten RPG list; it sure took a lot longer than I thought it would

I compiled it as follows:

1st place votes get 10 points, 2nd place votes get 9... 10th place votes get 1.

If someone put two games in one place, I averaged them (2 games for #1, each game gets 9.5 points, #2 gets 8 points). I made sure that no one got to “spend” more than 55 points. If there were more than 10 games listed and ranked, I just ignored all of the ones after #10. If there were 10 or fewer games unranked, I gave them each 5.5 points. If there were more than 10 games unranked, I gave them each 55/N points, which accounts for some of the funky decimals you see here

I included everyone from the “Top Ten RPGs of all time” thread, including guests (most of them seemed legit). The only people I omitted were Himitsu, who had multiple lists, and a German guest with funky German names for games that I didn’t understand. There were a total of 61 voters, and 137 games mentioned.

The 1st number is the rank, then the game, the 1st number after the game is the number of points the game got, and the 2nd number after the game is the number of first-place votes the game got (I only counted exclusive first place votes, not ties).

And the winner is [drumroll please]:

Baldur’s Gate II!

BTW, sorry I couldn’t make the presentation prettier, I don’t know how to insert tables...

All i have to say is WOW!!!That is VERYimpressive!! i've never seen anyone do something like this and i am shocked to see it done. I am surprised BG2 won--i thought Morrowind or Gothic would. But your method seemed very accurate, and you did very good research.

Sweet. Can't believe BG2 stole the 1st place spot. Good work.

I'm really surprised with the high score for some games and the low ranks of others. Regardless, it's a very informative list.

Thanks to Wind for taking the time and effort. I imagine this will spawn some interesting conversation.

You know, I was really surprised that Diablo II got 25th on the list, considering how much abuse it tends to take here ("you might as well be playing Diablo" ).

Thief, despite not being considered a true RPG by most, was 27th with 36 points, and was almost triple the score of Thief II (14 pts).

Other series comparisons:

Ultima 7 conquers Brittania with 115.6 points and a 8th place finish, over Ultima Underworld (98.6) and Underworld II (61.1)

Wizardry 8 (13th place, 62 points) demolishes the other Wizardry games, with Wiz 7 coming the closest (37th place, 27 pts). Wizardry 3-5 did not get a single point!

Fallout and Fallout II are right next to each other in the standings, probably because most people rank them together or one just over the other. But Fallout I still takes the cake by 24.5 points.

Daggerfall won the Elder Scrolls contest, finishing a strong 10th (85.6 pts) over Morrowind (17th, 54.5 points).

Might & Magic 6 was the mightiest and magickiest, finishing in 9th with 94.7 points, almost twice as many as M&M 7 (16th, 59.2)

The most surprising results were for games I'd never heard of: Betrayal at Krondor (12th, 63 pts) and Lands of Lore (20th, 44.5). Are they still around and worth playing?

The top 10 games are all Interplay or from famous series (M&M, Ultima, Elder Scrolls), with the notable exception of Gothic (which is spawning a series). Is this due to the fact that sequels mean that the original game was really good, or is it just that people remember games more fondly if they've played multiple games in a set (thus developing more attachment as they play it more and more)?

Oh well, it's fun to look at the trends... I honestly thought that Fallout would win this thing

Heh thats odd I was thoroughly convinced fallout would win this thing and gothic would be second, interesting, i havent seen much bg groupies here.
Anyway to answer your question: Betrayal at Krondor is based on the Feist books (actually from what I recollect he even made a seperate plot for the game) and is available as abandonware/freeware at the sierra website under downloads (10 mb or so) http://www.sierra.com. Lands of Lore is the game that got me hooked on rpg, pretty good story and nice atmosphere for that time should be available in some bargain bins. It also has been released a while ago if i remember correctly under the Virgin White Label series. It's succesors never came even close imho.

Wow! That is a surprise. I didn't expect BG2 to make the top spot. I thought it would only make the the top five. Did you double check you're results? That seems almost unbelievable.
Then again, looking through the thread BG2 did make the top five of a lot of people's lists. I guess those numbers add up quickly, although I didn't think they'd add up to that amount.

Well I double-checked right after entering each person's vote, or most of them anyway. So I don't really wanna check them again, unless there's a really good reason

About BG2, it actually got fewer first place votes (4) than Gothic or Planescape Torment (5 apiece). But as you said, BG2 made a LOT of lists, and boy did those numbers add up. People may be slightly less fanatic about it, but most people seem to respect its quality...

That or Minsc just threatened to sick Boo on 'em...

I bet the M&M series would have done better if MM9 hadn't been released...

Nice, nice, nice, even if I don't think much of Iso3D. Good job Windwalking!
I think only one ISO game made my top ten list , which was Jagged Alliance II...
