I would suggest geting a Deadric Axe. You can get one by killing Deadra Lords. It is very good for enchanting. Also you could try glass stuff, atlough it wares off quite quickly.

Yes, deadric axe should be good (if not best) choice.
Just kill several deadras and you will get one.

Since this is the Spoilers section...

Head to Seyda Neen and go around behind the lighthouse. There's a pool of greenish water there, with a broken tree stump in it. Try to jump from the walkway up to the lighthouse onto the top of that tree stump. Inside you'll find a nice axe, free for the taking, and perfect for the lower levels.

I would chose the second axe. Mainly because when an oponent blocks with a shield the magic damage is done anyway. Besides you can fight ghosts and other undead with it.

It's the range of damage the axe will do when cut hit occurs. Exactly what the damage will be will depend on how long you prepare for the hit (i.e. how long you hold down the left mouse button before releasing) and what you're axe skill is.

My character (Ulu Mulu) used the steel axe until he ran into a wandering merchant that was a no good crook (I think it was the one that sells the Boots of Blinding Speed). After killing the merchant, Ulu Mulu used the Viper Axe (basically a steel axe with some poison damage on strike) for most of the time after that.

Yep, that's the damage it can do - literally between 1 and 32 points of damage.

While you lose 4 points off your maximum damage with the second axe, the fact that it is magical and thus can damage undead beasties makes it worthwhile.

Incidentally, while we're here, go into the game options and find something called "Always use best attack" and turn it on. It can really improve the damage you deal, and takes very little away from the experience.

Ah, no. There's no concept of "experience" in Morrowind. I was referring to the lack of choosing your own attacks. Normally you can move forwards, side to side or stand still while fighting to do the different attacks, but it adds so little to the game that turning on Best Attack is usually worthwhile.
