| Gothic player seeks honest opinions about Wizardry 8 |
|
I'm thinking about getting Wiz 8, but am still undecided. Various reviews have said that the game has great customizability, but is really just a rehash (if a polished one) of standard RPG fare, with some new features thrown in. So I'm here to ask the fans: why do you like Wiz 8, and what are the negatives of this game?

i like Wizardry 8, because
- 1st person view
- round based tactical fighting
- cool spell system
- many items, weapons, armor
- good puzzles
- good story
- some fun and humor
- best level/skill advancement-system
in short: it is a true Wizardry game - a rpg-masterpiece. If you have never played a Wizardry game try the demo.

One can say any game these days is a "re-hash of standard RPG fare", as there has been a lot before. It's a re-hash in the sense it's a party of 6 casting spells, battling monsters, and wandering around on quests. But it's not a re-hash. Wiz8 has a unique combat and spell system, an "autoleveler" which keeps (or tries to keep) some balance to the game, new ideas for quests, NPCs who remember if you've met them before and their attitude towards you, and a lot more. I loved it, and would highly recommend it. By all means, go to www.sir-tech.com and download the demo, but I'll bet you get hooked if you're an RPGer. Not easy and not for young children, but a lot of fun.

i had never played a wizardry game before but i think it is a great game played my first party all the way through and a i'm starting a new party again because i missed so much the first time i usally dont miss much with rpg's but this game is such a large gameing area it's hard to find everthing.the customizing of your party members is probly the best one out there.

Yah, i say character development is fantastic. Since January, i've played to the end 14 times now, and the experience was different enough with each new party that i'm still playing 2 separate groups now, one just started a few 'real' days ago. |

I think this is perhaps the biggest compliment you can give a game. I usually finish an RPG one time. I restart them a few times before going all the way thru, but once I get to the end, I've generally had enough. The only RPGs I've ever finished more than once are MM6, MM7, and Wiz8. The joy of RPGs for me is growing my character/party from scared runts to world beaters. I don't powergame, but I spend hours agonizing over the exact makeup of my crew and how to "properly" develop them. If that sort of thing appeals to you, I'd feel confident in saying Wiz8 is about as good as it gets.
Definitely try the demo. In summary, I'd say there are very few RPG gamers out there that won't enjoy Wiz8 at least enough to justify the expense.

Oops! You specifically asked for negatives. Here's the most common gripes:
1) dated graphics (not that bad IMO, but this ain't Morrowind)
2) occasionally tedious combat (a few battles against lots of enemies can get a little slow)
3) the challenge of picking a balanced party (some folks get a little frustrated, although this was the high point for me- the people here on the board will fall all over themselves with party advice if you need some guidance)

If you haven't heard, Wiz8 seems to do a sloppy job of memory management in some ways, which can eventually (not often, but after many hours) cause your game and/or computer to crash. Best advice is to save often, and not have other apps running in the background. I think my DSL connection particularly gave Wiz8 fits for some reason.

Most of it is already mentioned, I just want to add a few other things.
Pros:
-Up to 8 characters in your party.
-Multiple endings
-Very big gameworld that offers a lot of fredom.
- Combat like MM6-MM9, but with a greater focus on party-formation.
Cons:
-You can't see your own characters (If some should care).
-You can actually drop and loose main-quest items, which can prevent you from finish the game (Yes, there is no boundaries for peoples carelessness)
Other facts:
-If, you not strategic smart enough, the game can give you a hard time in battles, both in toughness and frequency.
-Don't expect to go solve every quest, you get immediately. Many quests need a lot of exploring, before you even gets a clue what they are about.
- Your characters will upgrade (level up) approximately 25-30 times.
-As a Gothic fan you can also find different fractions in W8 you can join/help.

I was unaware of this. In fact, the game will not allow you to drop lots of items, popping up a message, "On second thought, you decide to hang on to this." or something like that. Which items did you drop? There was a post a while back about a player losing one of the three biggies, but I'm pretty sure he had a corrupt save, because he had two copies of a unique item in addition to the missing one.
