I think it really strongly depends on whether or not you enjoy Japanese console rpg's ... I think it's fair to say that if you do enjoy that kind of game that you would like skies of arcadia ... myself, being not very fond of Japanese style console rpg games I doubt I would find much enjoyment from it, but I would hardly call my opinion definitive for any other human, it's purely representative of my taste ...

As Kabduhl says, it depends on what style you prefer.

My son (14) played it to death on the Dreamcast and I watched / played with some admiration but...........

I have played FFX on our PS2 and enjoyed that also, but it does not have the appeal to ME as does (say) the BG series or similar.

Maybe im just getting old.

Hexmaster

No sweat, Hexmaster, the older I get, the better I like Japanese games. I'd rather buy a new FF or Zelda than another BG (which I started to play only recently, but it happened to bore me out of my mind). So it can't be age . Must be some other factor...

For sure.....Deep down, I know that when Skies is revamped for the PC, I will probably give it a go.

Now you mention it, I havent played BG1 or 2 for some time. Bought IWD2 3 months ago and havent even got out of the first settlement......hmmm. Havent played that for ages either.

In fact I havent played any RPG's for about 2 months....aarrgghh! whats happening to me ??!!

I have been on a "strategy" fest of late (Tib Sun, Sudden Strike, Age of Mythology etc)....last RPG session was 7 weeks ago with Div Div.

Maybe I am looking at the BG series for what it was, not how it holds up now....nostalgia is not what it used to be....

Cant wait for something new and exciting to get my teeth into...

Regards,

Hexmaster

No offence but console style rpg's mislead certain people......

I have a friend who calls himself an ultimate rpg-gamer BUT he has NEVER heard of an rpg that isn't console style......

I must say that I HATE console rpg's because the story line in most of them are all the same.....

they are extremely non-interactive in my opinion ... character models don't change, no choice on stat placement, no choice on classes, skills, very little choice in general ... i like choices in my rpg's it's what sets them apart from adventure games ... japanese console rpgs feel just like adventure games with boring battle systems ... i hate the walking around in WALKING MODE then all of a sudden WHOOOSH 'I'm in COMBAT MODE now!' stuff that they all seem to use ... characters are overly stereotypical ... the full motion video sequences are usually good though ... to each his own though ...

See, for me the only real RPGs are pen & paper RPGs... everything else is just a toy . So I'd surely cock a brow at someone who told me he was a die-hard RPGer when the only RPGs he ever played were CRPGs. It's all a matter of perspective.

Just as in most CRPGs: the world is threatened and you're the only one who can save it. What makes a story good IMO is not the basic layout (because that's the same everywhere, with extremely few exceptions) but the plot twists.

I've heard the random battles are crushingly overdone in this game.

For me, that's the single biggest turnoff to console RPGs. I'm enjoying Final Fantasy X, but the random battles are really getting me down.

The matter here is very simple:

A particular game can get 100 marks from 100 reviewers, but if that game are NOT your cup of tea then you will still dislike it.

Fun with numbers

Hmm
I noticed you forgot Gamespot gave the GC remake a 7.5
http://gamespot.com/gamespot/filters/products/0,11114,537506,00.html

And frankly their reviews hold much more weight than most others, and if you look at a lot of the sites you list they seem to give out high scores like candy.

And regardless, if you don't like random battles you will HATE this game, regardless of the reviews.
