Any fix for testing bug in D3D mode?

I'm running an Athlon 1.8 with 512MB DDRAM, Hercules Prophet FDX Radeon 8500 LE with Catalyst 2.3 drivers (tried with 2.1), Audigy Player, Windows XP and ZoneAlarm Pro (cable modem connected).

I can't do the installation test in D3D mode as all I get is a black screen with a mouse cursor. In DirectDraw it's fine, and I can then go on to play the game.

Any ideas anyone? I've seen reference eslewhere to refreshlock, but have no idea what relates to.

Hi Loremaster. I am assuming that you probably for something like Rage3D running to control your refresh rates? I have read elsewhere that that is what causes the test to mess up. I never tried turning it off to run the test, but I found that if you check 'skip test', the game will run ok on the Radeon in D3D mode. Try it. Everything should work fine.

Simon

PS. BTW. Never thanked you for posting that solution to the Morrowind Fog on Hercules site. Thanks!

Hi Simon,

Thanks for the prompt reply, I'll have a more detailed look shortly, I did my quick install and boot-up that I usually do when I buy a game and before I read the manual, in this case straight after an 80 miles drive home from a couple of days away so my gaming brain isn't yet in full gear. Yes, I'm using Rage3D Tweak.

Thanks for the comment on Morrowind, heck that was a few moons ago, haven't loaded that game up in quite a while. Looks like we're even now...

Loremaster,

I have a Raedon 8500 and had the same problem. What fixed it was this:

1. Downloaded and installed the absolute latest drivers from ATI.
2. On the laraian BB, the developers admitted that they had problems
with the "test" portion of the config app for the 8500. So they
said that you can bypass it by just clicking on "Skip Test", then
hitting "Test", then after that, "Apply and Close".

I did this and everything worked fine.

Thanks elkston. I can confirm that method worked for me, but I have since switched to a Geforce 4 as I also had problems running the Asherons Call 2 Beta with the Radeon and gave up on it. The Geforce is stunning, and it's improved performance very noticeable.
