Cloth, Garments, Burlap??? What's the point?

I just fought my way through the ice caverns full of annoying Ice Warriors (MAN I hate those things). Now, I am in yet ANOTHER cavern, but before I go much further away from this trader dude, I want to upgrade my armor. This guy is expensive, but that is probably because he seems so POed at me, and he is the only merchant in miles, so I must buy my stuff from him if I have any hope of completing the next cave in one piece.

I have 1 Nature mage (the wizard guy from the ice cave), and 2 combat mages, plus my main character, who is 50-50 between nature magic and melee. The wizard guy and one of the combat mages came equipped with this completely sucky robe armor. I used Ulora, from the end of the crypts as the second combat mage, and I used normal armor on her, as heavy as she could hold. She has been progressing rather slowly in combat magic compared to the other combat mage.

My question is, what exactly is the benefit of equipping mages with this horribly crappy armor? Should I put good armor on them before I go into the next cave, or should I do the mages all in robes?

Ok, I still wonder about the robe thing, but I went ahead past the trader dude. I have now completed the cavern, and have arrived at yet another forest, I believe the "Dark Forest". Anyway, along the way I picked up something called the "Eye of Rage" or "Eye of Fury" or something like that. It is some kind of giant marble. I can't equip it, it doesn't seem to DO anything. What am I hauling it around for? I don't mind spoilers, but if you can tell me without them, I would prefer it. Should I sell it at the next opportunity, is it a bonus, or should I keep it for some purpose later in the game?

Let me put it this way about the Fury's Eye: Did you play Diablo, and do you know what Wirt's Leg was for?

@Vaticide
Spoil us please .

@Hamesterlord
Mages armors usually has skills that mages needs (inteligence, level of magic skills). And they also depends on inteligence not on strenght. It means they are usually best armors you can put on your mages.
However my two mages had armor I found. Strange pieces without magic abilities, only with improved armor rating, but also without requirements. My third mage had one of this robes, I bought for horrible amount of money, because I didnt find third piece of that wonderful "jacket".

The Fury's Eye is used to enter a secret area in MULTIPLAYER only. You have to import it with your single player character, get to a very high level, and then use it along with a few other items to enter... (unsettling silence) the secret chicken dungeon! There are specific how-to spoilers on other sites, and I haven't done it myself, so I can't say what level you should be, either. I just konw it is hard.

Secret Chicken Dungeon? Are you kidding, or does Chris Taylor have a sense of humor?

Nope. Never played Diablo. The limits of my RPG experience up to this game are the Quest for Glory series, which I never bothered to finish, and the Wiz 8 demo.

So there is really no benefit to putting robes on a mage except for that is the best armor they can get without strength? Plus the robes have more "magey bonuses" like intelligence. Ok. I get it now.

EDIT: This may be a stupid question, but, "Wirt's Leg"? Isn't that supposed to be attatched to "Wirt's Pelvis"?

Hey, I never played Diablo either... Strange considering that I have Icewind Dale, Summoner, Anachronox, Gothic, Nox (the closest to Diablo on the list), and just bought Wizardry 8, which by the way has surprised me so far how smoothly it runs on my computer. Oh! I have Dungeon Seige too

And you must not forget that in mages robes mages looks like mages but in normal armor they do not look like mages...

I thought Diablo was a superb game! Multiplayer was even better! One of my first multiplayer experiences (internet).

Five Minutes into playing Diablo2 I turned of my computer! Same old same old!

I kinda' thought Dungeon Siege was a Diablo repeater too... but the true 3D and the fact that I didn't have to click the left mouse button to death was its saving grace.
