RPGDot Feature: The Temple of Elemental Evil Review

Troika's Temple of Elemental Evil has been thoroughly tested by our D&D expert EverythingXen. He played no less than three times through the game before writing down his impressions of this hardcore RPG. Here's a little teaser:
In combat the most wonderful feature Temple put in was the area of effect masks from pen and paper. They're cut out masks you can put on a battle-map to get an opinion as to who exactly you're going to bake when you throw a fireball, etc. Being computer generated masks you can move them so that a fireball missed a paladin by a half foot. It's more accurate than you get with tabletop, but it certainly doesn't diminish a game's quality to have perfect control over where your spells land. I loved it. And it made cone effects (fear, cone of cold) useful for once... in other games you almost always hit a friend with a cone because they're so hard to aim properly.
Click here for the full feature review!
I agree, it is a good review that covered everything fairly. I do think the bad voice acting could of maybe been highlighted more. But I think everything was covered nicely. I am glad you reviewed before the patch also.

I was wondering why there are 7 screens from the game movie and opening movie and only 3 screenshots of game play?

Movie Screenshots: Because the movie is beautiful and looks so much nicer than the in-game schots and we didn't have that many in-game screenshots in out gallery to chosse from.

If I want to see a movie I'll go to the movies. Gameplay and funfactor are the only things that matter in the game.

Actually, I also tend to prefer in-game screenshots in a review; don't get me wrong, it's nice to see the pretty cutscenes, and one or two screencaps are fine, but I do like to know what the game actually looks like when I'm playing it, and I especially like screenshots that show the interface.

Ok...I'll keep that in mind for the next review I am layouting!
Still, at the bottom of the review, it says 'Game Info' and that leads on to our gallery of ToEE pictures

No, I do not. Please send the link and I'll expand the gallery a little.

I love random errors eating my huge message here. Oh well. To summarize:

- Yes, needs more voice acting. Even the crappy voicesets from Baldur's Gate would have helped.

- I didn't run into many serious game stopping bugs. Maybe I'm lucky but I can only review what I experience. The few bugs I hit didn't detract from the enjoyment.

- I should have taken screen shots. I always forget to do that leaving our editors to do their best with what they have.

Ammon: Wait a few days for the patch. The game is great and worthy of its rating as is, in my opinion, but in case you are one of the people who will suffer the endless crash to desktop errors I'd wait. The patch is only a few days away, they're claiming.

Thanks, I think I'll pick this one up now once the patch is out and I'm done with Gothic 2. I was hoping this one wasn't a flop.

Patch should be out Friday: The patch notes fix pretty much EVERYTHING I remotely complained about.

So if they deliver what they promise the game will be MUCH better by Friday. You'll be able to enchant already magical weapons and armor, which is as it should be... potions cause attacks of opportunity (oh, I'll love those suicidal bugbears then... now they're annoying), and the full list of magical items in item creation will be able to be created.

A month isn't a bad idea, but two weeks would probably do. Then again we all know how patches tend to break as much as they fix at times...
