I can't say anything about Gothic, because I never played it (never even saw anyone playing it.), but Morrowind is the BEST game I ever played! The biggest complain is that most NPCs are generic, but they are not. People who say that, played Morrowind no more then a week(which is a VERY small while regarding Morrowind.). As your level change, people will talk in different way. Also like when you're wearing fancy dresees and stuffs, they'll say that you look good, but if you have a lot of money or if you are a high level char, they'll say that you could get a better outfit. Abd at last the Best thing in the game, IMHO is TES CS. It is very easy to use, but still makes some VERY cool stuff!

Ok Morrowind is a great game and very fun and everything but doesn't compare to gothic I think Gothic is more Fun to play I have finished the Gothic Game but never get that motivation to finish Morrowind although I have it with Tribunal.

Gothic 1 wins over MW, definitely. I imagine G2 with be even better. Morrowind had a lot of potential to be a great game, but it didn't live up to that potental. Bethsoft squandered their post development time on unnecessary expansion packs instead of fixing the problems with the core game. Money rules, I guess.

The worst thing for me about Morrowind was the way you communicate with the NPCs. It's all written not spoken. That's why I think none of the NPCs are worth remembering them, like Val said. Second but less important is that Morroind is intentially played as a FP RPG while Gothic is 3P RPG. I never really like FP games so this adds for me a negative point. (Yes, I know that you can play Morrowind from 3P as well, but the controls are less accurate this way.
Third reason has been explained by Neo:
quote:
everyone thinks something else. maybe you like to explore the world, without meeting much people.
it's true that Morrowind has a lot more to expore, and has more secrets.
but it is hard to find the main quest. there are so much -little or big- quests, that many people won't do the main quest at all.

in Gothic, it is different. almost every quest has something to do with the main quest. like you must find find an amulet for Sly. it has nothing to do with the main quest -you think-. because ot has. if you do the quest, you are one step closer to becoming a shadow. and one strep closer to the end of the game. if you solve big quests in Morrowind, it may bring up some money, but not information or a solution to the main quest.

Conclusion: Buy Gothic 2

It didn't bother me that the dialogue was all written. What bothered me was the presentation and the writing itself (which sometimes was good, and most other times terribly generic).

If it's going to be all text, it should have good writing. Good writing that reveals the personality, mind, and possibly agenda of the character you speak with. Not, "Hello, X, I have a problem. Here it is. Will you help me?" And your input is "1. Yes, 2. No., or 3. Continue" That's not very interactive.

In presentation, they listed everything as if it was a webpage...which might seem all right, except that clicking on key words just led to information being repeated verbatim (rereading insipid text) and somehow felt disconnected. I prefer choosing dialogue options as in the BG, Fallout, and Gothic games. Reading or hearing my character speak dialogue reinforces the idea that my character is interacting with other NPCs.

One thing I liked about Morrowind was its emphasis on history and world building. It's clear they put in a lot of work toward that end.

The way I see it, and I'll try to be fair.

Morrowind:

Way better character customization and diversity.
Bigger world
Developed Mod-building.
Better graphics.
More advanced magic and skill-system.
Way better itemization.
Better combat.
Greater freedom.
More quests etc.

Gothic 2:

Way better character interaction.
Way better dialogue.
Way more challenging.
Slightly better story.
Better sound/music.

Better combat? Don't think so. And while the graphic might be more cutting edge in MW, the actual modeling of the world was not as good as gothic.

Uh... well, combat CAN always be discussed, right?

As for modelling, Morrowind used round 3d models for most things, while Gothic 2 used crude 2d models for most nature and background stuff (weaponry and trinkets).

Let me put it to you this way:

Morrowind is by all means a great game and has entertained me for hours. But it is too long and too big (and too easy) for me to ever play it all the way through.

The Gothic games however are just the right length and difficulty, and are positively oozing with character. In fact, after just fifteen minutes into Gothic 2, I had already decided that if I quit RIGHT there... it would still have been the greatest looking, feeling, and immersive RPG to date.

So here are the ratings in level of fun:
Morrowind (with expansions) =
Gothic 1 =
Gothic 2 =

I really don't think they are comparable. Today I'd say Gothic 2 is the better of the two, but when I played Morrowind, I would definetely(sp?) say that was one of the best games I've ever played. Still is, but Gothic 2 is better, even if you can't compare them.
My advice would be to buy Gothic 2, and if you find MW at a cheap price, buy that one too. If you like it, then go for the expansions.

Sure, why was combat better in MW?

As for the world modeling, I meant that the environment was more realistic in Gothic with natural caves, mountains and water feature. MW was just a flat surface with hills raised up from it, despite superior technology. Underground, it was no contest. The mines and temple in G were spectacular and spooky.

I never played Gothic, but Morrowind's sound is one of the best I ever listened to. When you play it, you don't notice, but if you turn the music off, the game feels totally different.

I thought the combat part was brought up in the "Gothic is no real RPG" thread?

As for the whole Gothic 2 caves beat Morrowind caves; Morrowind caves were HUGE compared to the three-small-cave-rooms-in-a-row Gothic 2 had. Plus, they had FAR better lighting and interiors (crystals and watrerfalls) and looked FAR more natural.

The mountains land-layers in Gothic 2 were blocky with lots of unnatural sharp edges. Morrowind had BY FAR the more organic nature.
The static, murky water in Gothic 2 was really badly made compared to the amazing water in Morrowind.

I've played (and finished) both Gothics and the main MW game. There is no way that I'm wasting my money on any MW expansion packs. I would call MW an amusing experience, while I would call Gothic an epic experience.

A simile came to mind. I would compare Gothic(s) to the first Matrix movie and MW to the second one. They are both the same genre. Tell similar stories (fantasy world hero saves the universe from evil). They use similar presentation, but... While the second one relies completely upon eye candy of computer generated presentation to woo and charm, the first one has story character and uses slight tricks of presentation to grow on you in ways one cannot quantify or enumerate.

We can all sit around all day long trying to figure out why we liked the first Matrix movie and dind't like the second one, same as we can sit all day long and discuss why we liked Gothic(s) and didn't really get so amazed by MW. But ultimately, there is no specific thing we can point our finger at and say: "that did it!"

Bottom like, buy Gothic. You will most likely end up getting more hours of playtime out of Gothic that you would out of a complete box set of MW GOTY. And that play time will be immeasurably more fun.
