| Game pad for Gothic? (a bit off topic) |

I am really enjoying this game but I have a problem. Due to a very bad back (neck), I find myself unable to sit and play *any* games on the PC for more than a half hour at a time. The problem seems to be in the very nature of using the mouse with one hand and the keyboard with the other. After a while this starts a strain in my shoulders and can develop into severe pain if I don't quit soon enough. *But*, I find that with both hands down in my lap using a gamepad type device, I don't have nearly as bad a time. I know this because my kids, not wanting to see dear old dad give up his obsession ...er...hobby, bought me an X-box and Morrowind, and using this controller I was able to play longer without too much pain. I just have trouble getting into X-box type games (they seem a bit too simple) and greatly prefer PC games (Morrowind was OK). Anyway, can someone recommend a good gamepad type device that has buttons that can be re-programmed for any game or keyboard/mouse combination (such as Gothic)? Thanks for reading this and I apologize for the OT post, but I'm really frustrated. You wouldn't want to see an 'old timer' give up gaming, would you?  Thanks. |

IŽll mve this to Gothic 2 - General because it has better chances for a qualied answer there. Gothic 1 is compatible with some game pads. The search function should bring up detailed answers.

 Hey, I Love playing With Joysticks, so My Recomendation http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/sidewinder/support/gamepadpro.asp
(If you are going to Buy one) Is the Old Game Pad Pro From Microsoft, you can play Both games with that joystick, becouse you can map any combination of Keys to ANY button, you will Enjoy the game More, Etc Etc, look for reviews of the pad, it has a Proportional pad that really rocks

I would recommend you go to a retailer and try several pads before you decide. Programmable is important, cordless would be nice.
Both Gothics work with gamepads, given the driver can be configured correctly.

I don't know if this helps you or not, but it is perfectly possible to play both Gothic I and II with *just* the keyboard. I fact, the default controls are designed just for that. I think it works out quite nicely.

Thanks for all the help and advice. I finally settled on a Logitech Wingman cordless rumblepad (don't really think I need the 'rumble' part). It seems to be working very nicely now that I've figured it out. I do get some freezing in windows (re-boot necessary) sometimes if I alt-tab back and forth a lot to test different button assignments, but all in all it does what I wanted it to do (no hands on the desk at all). It is quite responsive. Thanks again. |
