My moderator friend usually bans similar topics on his automotiveforums.com People keep on naming their favorites... endlessly... predictably... Myself is not exception.

So for that matter here is my top 3:

1. Planescape: Torment
2. Baldur's Gate series
3. Wizardry 8

All of those are good RPGs. Not extremely new though.

For me, Gothic was the game that got me into RPG's in the first place. I'd definatly suggest that game.

If I had to play only one game, I’d chose “fallots”

Hmm, here are some suggestions: Fallout 1-2, Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate 2, Gothic 1, Arcanum...

I think you've been given the best. Of the new releases, Gothics, Arx and DD are the best. Of older games, you can't go past PS-T, Fallouts, BG's and Wiz8. Surprisingly no-one mentioned M'Wind or NWN. Good games, but second tier.

I didn't think Arx Fatalis was that great, the puzzles are INCREDIBLY vague, which leads to major frustration.

I loved Divine Divinity. I thought System Shock 2 was unbelievable, and if you haven't played them the Thief games are cool (although not CRPG's technically.)

I thought Wizardry 8 was amazing, it's tough though, so you've been warned.

Also, if you haven't played Summoner, definitely grab that title, just have a game guide handy, because it's TOUGH.

I agree with the recommendations for Planescape and Fallout, you can't go wrong there, and you can probably get them cheap.

An odd title, that I enjoyed quite a bit, was Anachronox. It's a console style game, but it was actually a LOT of fun.

Just some suggestions.

If you can find a copy (and get it to run) Darklands was great. It is very old now (like 9 years or more), but it is very open ended, a good system, and very cool world.

I didn't like Arx , pretty poorly done if you ask me... Nor did I really like DD, too much hack n' slash (whice wasn't really fun either)... Im looking forward to Gothic 2 tho. Lionheart and Greyhawk will probably rule too!

You might also try Jagged Alliance 2; it's from '99 but quite sweet.

I have revived the <top ten rpgs of all times> topic - maybe we should post new top 10s, because many new games have been released last year and opinions are changing ...
