Yes there are a lot of weapons in this game.
But ultimately this game is liniar. But it really doesn't matter much.

Yes game is linear. Beginning is maybe somehow nonlinear, but as soon as you join one of three camps, it is linear.
There is a lot of items. But not in every way. For example, you can wear just one armor (not separated gauntlets, breast plate, boots...). There are no helms, no shields. and just few kinds of armors. But a lot of different weapons, potions, books, scrolls and many many seedlings (hundreds).

I play a lot of FPS games and compared to those this games is not linear at all. Ever heard the term rail shooter, where every time you go down a corridor there is only one door that will open. That door is where you need to go...Well this game has none of that. In many ways it is very non linear. If you feel like hunting to increase experience, feel free to go into the forest and hunt away, and many many side quests can be done whenever you like, etc. The problem is that like any good book or game with a compelling story to tell, the main path to follow that story will seem linear. Every RPG I have played is linear in that respect. But this game has more freedom than most other games I have played.

Gothic is rather linear concerning story development, but you have a lot of freedom. If you are clever enough to avoid battles you can explore 90% of the map at the beginning of the game.
Itīs not like 'enter the room through door1, press button, leave through door2', with the exception of a few dungeons.
The game leaves space for creativity. |

There are certainly plenty of weapons, both melee and ranged.
However, the way in which you obtain these is, IMO, very cheesy. Basically Gothic's economy is very weak - chapter two and beyond, you will have more money (Ore) than you know what to do with. So to prevent players from obtaining the best equipment toward the beginning of the game, certain equipment is only made available for you to buy at the beginning of each chapter. This kind of prevents suspenion of disbelief when, at the beginning of a new chapter, your regular supplier of arms suddenly can provide you with far better equipment than he could literally 10 minutes ago ...

Oh, and to be fair to the game, it is very non-linear - at least in it's level design. (The majority of the game world can be thought of as one huge level, with the exception of mines/dungeons)
The story is, of course, very linear (as has been said above) but then that's to be excepted I guess. |

Compared to a game like Daggerfall, then the game is linear. You can only go to "x" number of places. There is a shield enclosing you, so you can only go places within the shield.
As far as weapons and armor, well consider where you're at. You are in a jail for crying out loud, what do expect to find there? Your're lucky to get anything above a crude sword. Anything above that, well you've got to snuff someone or mug them.

I agree with the last comments but what I do miss is a shield and a better means of traveling... |

Yep, shields would be truly excellent. And as for a better way to travel, beam me up Scotty! Have you been following this thread:
