Thief: Deadly Shadows (Xbox) - Interview @ Team Xbox |
|
Team Xbox offers up an interview with Ion Storm's Paul Weaver, discussing 'Thief: Deadly Shadows' with a console perspective:
What are your thoughts about the more recent stealth titles like Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell? Were there any elements that you took from these games during the development of Deadly Shadows?

Paul Weaver: Due to its PC heritage, the Thief series really hasn't had the attention that the more console driven titles such as Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell have enjoyed over the past few years, which is a shame, as for the most part those titles have borrowed more from Thief than vice-versa. Both of those titles are of course classics in their own right and with our transition to Xbox, we hope to show the mass gaming public that Thief: Deadly Shadows deserves to sit alongside those titles. The major difference in this game is that we aren't concentrating on modern gadgets or being a spy - This is a medieval world with low-tech solutions and a hero who's totally out for himself - It's a refreshing change!
|

I know how you feel. Still - Thief 3 shows some real promise if you read the interview - the 'body awareness' immersion and the talk of 'emergent' play from the AI.
And there will always be smaller, intelligent games coming out for the true gamer - just look at the 'bedroom coder' automobile simulation scene (LFS etc).... in many ways we never had it so good (except maybe during Looking Glass' heyday) |

I agree. After reading thru the previews, T3 sure looks to be as good as it's predecessors. Just because it's also on the Xbox won't necessarily mean it's going to be bad (ala DXIW). It's rival, Splinter Cell PC version doesn't feel like a console game at all! I'll give T3 a chance and see the final product before giving it harsh criticism. Who knows, maybe Warren did learn from his DXIW mistakes. _________________ The world is small, nasty and complicated, and everybody dies alone... - Sam Fisher |

I'm really praying it isn't rushed out the door buggy. There's no way to butcher a game as simple in content or execution with as talented as Ion Storm are. After all, they DID design the original Deus Ex, so I have moderate hopes for T3.

To me it does. Because it's gameplay is hilarious linear. |

Wow! What a novel idea!

Well, they announced ages ago that all content was finished and all that remained was testing and tweaking. That was a month or two ago, which means plenty of time til release (I have a feeling it may be Eidos who have learned from their mistakes - it seems obvious to me that DX:IW was rushed for a Christmas release, and I find it highly unlikely that Ion Storm made that decision - the cool reception it received may have convinced Eidos to allow the luxury of ample testing time for T: DS).
Of course that doesn't mean it definitley won't be buggy, unbalanced, etc. - it just means that, if that's the case, Ion Storm will have no excuse! |

This is Ion Storm. I'm sure Warren will find some way to shift the blame if anything goes wrong. Or, as a last resort, they can just get defensive, like they did with invisible war. In any case, it's too soon to judge this game. It's going to be released soon, so lets quit the Warren bashing until we see the finished product. I'll admit I'm stricken by the loss of rope arrows, but if this turns out half as good as it looks, it's going to be the top game on my list for this year. _________________ "Madness is the first step towards unselfishness.
