Consoles, not PC, are actually doomed.

I was going to never share my thinking, but instead patent it and make millions. Then I realized that there is nothing for me to patent, all the technolgy is there or beyond me to form and patent. So share I will.

If you take certain truths and hold them up to logic, instead of thinking immediate short-term fads, it becomes clear that PC gaming is the future of gaming.

Absolute and Probable Truths:

1) At my work, my computer consists of a monitor and a mouse and a keyboard. There is a network computer with all the apps on it. There is a name for it like a dumb computer or something or other, but all that is on my desk is a mouse and a monitor and a keyboard.

2) Homes will become more PC dependant and more and more things will be run through the home PC network. I read an article talking about how the home PC will be like a curcuit breaker or electricity in ways, something that every household needs to function. This is more of a possible truth instead of an absolute trith. Buth PCs are not going anywhere.

3) Consoles try to emulate a PC more and more (XBOX). Therefore, you can argue that consoles repressent only one function of a PC. And since a console's technolgy is locked once it hits production for the most part, and PCs are instantly able to apply and use new technolgy a PC can perform the one function of consoles better. You can by a controller for a PC if that is what you like. You could argue that graphics are selling driver for games, or multiplayer, PC will always beat consoles in this arena.

4) The only advantage consoles offer over PC is ease of use for the masses (which will disapate as the masses become more PC dependant and technolgicly savey), and easier development for developers which, as a consumer, means nothing to me. I don't give two s**t's how easy a developer has it or not, just make me a good game.

I really think in the not so far off future people will hook their computer home network up to their TV and pick up a controller and start playing a game, instead of hooking a console system upto their TV and picking up a controller to play their games.

In an interview with Warren Specter, he tells gamers to buy a console and says a console costs you less than a grfx card. I believe people will realize that a console performs one function that their computer does, and their computer does it better, so why waste money on a console?

PC's are better for RTS's, FPS's, and MMORPGs, and more advanced multiplayer. Consoles have no genre advantages if you own a PC controller.

The console market might be booming now, and the PC-gaming market on the decline, but home networking is here and PC gaming will logically be the much more viable market once it home networking is main stream. All you will need is a TV, a couch, and a controller to play your PC games

I have to agree with you. With the fact that the PC is so multipurpose, I don't see consoles going anywhere in the long run.

I agree with you 100%!
you hit the nail directly on the head!

Im sick of these console buffs talking about how the pc is dying ... yet they go and brag about the newest consoles havin hard drives and how they steal games originally for the pc ... ahem halo, dx:iw, theif III... and so on ... if it wasnt for pcs those fools would still be on the original NES, they need to respect the Eldar Gaming System

What I believe will happen is that consoles and the PC (plus TV, DVD, etc) will merge into one single device. Whether that means consoles will become more like PCs, or PCs will become more like consoles is debatable.

There are already wireless media streaming devices that allow you to watch movies on your TV that are stored on your PC (perhaps having downloaded it from the net, for example). goshuto is definitely right that the devices are converging - which may mean the death of the console or the end result may look different to everything we have now.

I have another item to your console death-knoll list: their proprietry licensing nature. The world likes open-source (even if its success has been limited so far) and eventually both players and developers will get sick of paying fees to the tripart monopoly. Just don't expect it soon.

Merging consoles has a high cost and if finally produce such things it will take a long time till the cost will drop and get available to anyone.Take for example mini disks. Those machines combine small size ,good quality of sound, are competible with other machines, they can record, their disk can be copied but their price is still so high even if they have been in market for many years now.
Merging consoles is nothing like "serving" a DvD,Tv,PC or a game-console just in one box.

PC-Console-PC, etc. It is a cycle, and it probably will be a cycle for a long time. PC gaming will come back for a while, when console game makers get lazy and PC games continue to be innovative (just like it has happened before). Neither are going away forever, until we all just have terminals of one giant central computer, or we are bombed back into the stone age. In the latter situation, you'll find me in the igloo made out of GameCubes.

Anyone ever heard of a console game having mods? Yeah, PCs are definitely more versatile, and well, better.

Most of the gaming will happen on consoles in the future. In the console cycle starting in ~7 years (PS4, etc.) we will get HDTV output with superb sound out of the box. Internet connectivity, download of games and movies will be out of the box.
Games will look and sound so damn good that the better technology of the PC two years later will no longer matter. How can you beat cordless multiplayer gaming on your sofa on a 70" HDTV TFT display and 7.1 sound, no patches, no configuration problems, no trouble?
Then the PC will be a small niche for gaming. All the multimedia stuff will be taken over by the consoles.
What else will come?
-Biiig budget console games. Even today Sony only gives PS3 licenses to devs with more than 100 full time employees. This will increase.
-The solution of the piracy problem. Some day in few years EA, Sony, MS, Atari and Ubi will start to _require_ an open internet connection when you start a game. Of course every PC or console is identifyable. Problem solved.
-This is also the way out for the smaller devs. They´re limited to PC due to lack of console licenses. Killing the piracy problem opens a profitable niche for games up to a certain budget. 200k sold full price units are enough for most RPGs.

I agree with the theory that they will essentially become extinct as time marches on. As it is now, you can already get online with them. Gone are the days when a memory card is needed, they have hard drives now as well. If you want, you can even get a keyboard too. Pretty soon, you will have chat rooms to chat in over your console (if there arent already). But in their seeming "innovation", they are actually just catching up to what pc gamers have had for years. They are soon just going to evolve into "gaming" pc's, made by Atari and Nintendo

I can see the advertisements already in the year 2006:
"...you can even take your own screenshots of the game, and print them out too with the new Xbox 2600 printer!"

then the new "Xbox Mouse Controller"

Besides, console FPS's are a joke. With most of the biggest blockbuster games being FPS's, they will have to get some kind of mouse equivlent going. Id love to see an Unreal match between a squad of pc players, and their console bretheren. I suspect it would be anything but a "match"

I mentioned all this. Home networking will allow for wireless connectivity everywhere in your house. You can play a PC game on your sofa with a cordless controller and surround sound on a 70 inch TV. Why would I buy a console that performs a function I already have? In the not-so-distant future of course, not today.

When peole like Bing Gordon say "the PC market sucks", you have to start wondering, though. Although PC games still have frontrunners like HL2, D3 etc, consoles will soon have games like Fable Halo 2 and such.

As many of the bigger devlopers gear towards the console market, it may very well be true that the console will stick around for a long long time.
Because in the end, it's primarily the DEVELOPERS who choose which platform they will make games to. And right now, the console market looks just dandy. Mainly because younger people want something easy-to-use, non-complicated and relatively "cheap" for entertainment. Something computers and their games do seldom present. Instead they present patches, crashes and complications.

I disagree, and am going to explain why. I dont believe consoles will ever replace or overpower computers at all in gaming. You have got to be kidding. Look at the classrooms nowadays (in the USA). They are filled with computers, especially in grade schools. My little brother is in third grade, and they are teaching him equations used in computer programming languages such as C++. Soon he will begin taking typing, and that is done on <shock> a computer keyboard. The Internet has revolutionized and invigorated the entire computer system as well. Practically everyone will be on the computer soon. And thats all because of computer technology's effects on society. Our workplaces are permeated by computers and computer networks, not by console-based mechanics. Computers are at the forefront of technological innovation, and consoles are a mere by-product. Essentially, the console is a smaller version computer. As computers (especially PCs) become more sophisticated, they also become more compact with smaller and smaller components. Soon we will have desktop computers that are remarkably three times smaller than what we have now, while at the same time five times more powerful! Computers are the driving force behind gaming innovation. Consoles are forever bound to computer hardware innovation.

console game = watered-down version of a computer game; little innovation.
computer game = complex version of a console game; more innovation.

Console games tend to have their innovation in the software area (albeit very little), while computers are most notably innovative in the hardware area (very exceedingly so). Until console technology innovates hardware like the computer does, there is no chance that consoles will ever replace computers, end of story. Also, eventually a technological peak will be reached whereat computer hardware technology will even out and not improve nearly as quickly as currently: at that time, software development will be at its height and boom, and we will see drastic changes in software on computers. Part of that futurology consists of learning machines and artificial intelligence programs. Once machines begin to program themselves, then we will begin to see a literal miracle in software creation. Already they are going this in laboratories at MIT, Harvard, and a few other places. Believe me, ive done my research. The machines they are training, artificial lifeforms, have re-programmed themselves so much and so effectively that the code is unrecognizable and undecipherable to the engineers that created it in the first place. And they are so efficient that it would be impossible for a human being to create algorithms like those produced by evolving machine programs. I know this is off the subject, but this is the future with what is called InterMath, and you better get used to these ideas, because in 50 years, computers wont be programmed by humans anymore: they will programmed by the machines according to human-defined specifications. NPCs in games will be able to converse with you within the next 15 years like an intelligent person. If you dont believe that, then go to www.a-i.com and there you will find the proof of what is being created, slowly but surely. My point in all that speel is, that consoles arent going to innovate anything. They arent innovative platforms. The computer, on the other hand, has virtually LIMITLESS potential (albeit constrained to physical laws). That in a nutshelll, my friends, is what i learned from three years at the university studying artificial intelligence and computer science, et cetera... So take it from someone who has actually done the research.

My little brother and sister, they do play X-Box at home -- all day long, in fact -- but i can guarantee that as they become older, their tastes are going to change, as they are going to observe my quality of PC gaming, and from then on they will forget (at age ~14) totally about that X-Box and be wanting to play with the Big Boys on the computers. Already they play simple computer games. To say that consoles will be more geared toward the children is exactly my point. Face it, most console games are targetted toward the majority of console players, which consists of players between the ages of 6 to 16 -- they are all younger. The older more serious game players use computers. Stereo systems and big television screens will liberate consoles? I dont think so! Already i have a computer machine that exceeds that quality, and although i spent over four thousand dollars on my little personal super gaming machine, it has matchless performance compared to any console system multiplied by ten.

Consoles are for easy of use. Computers are for when you get serious.

So no, in my most un-humblest of opinions, computers wont replace consoles, and consoles wont replace computers. Each has a certain age-group that it targets, and a certain type of people it targets: the serious sophistication-wanton gamer (computers) and the more ease-of-use-wanton casual gamer (consoles). For all these stupid companies like Turbine (AC2) to target the casual players is silly. Most casual players play on consoles because they dont want to devote time to learning anything more complex than a button. They should have released their games on the X-Box, plain and simple, if they wanted to attract that group of gamers. Computer game players are more mature for the most part (except not in counterstrike, due to the explosive tempers of young male adhrenal glands, heh).[/spoiler]
