Can an archer still propser as a novice or militia member?

First off, sorry if this has already been covered in the forums, I didn't want to search and risk viewing too many spoilers.

I am an archer, about 30 dexterity and 40 bow skill. I decided to join the militia but saved the game before I made my choice. After joining the militia I was disappointed to find out that my free weapon is a sword and that crossbow training is the only viable option at the moment. I haven't explored the landowner's farm yet but I'm pretty sure it's a good place to raise my dexterity as its full of thieves.

If I join one class, does the game pretty much force me to go one direction? Will I never find high level trainers (I'm capped out at 30 DEX until I find another trainer) if I belong to one faction? Will the mercenaries never train me if I already joined the militia?

What I really wanted to do was become a mage but I looked at the robes armor ratings in the instructions and was disappointed. Is it possible to steal militia/mercenary armor or do I have to stick with my class's armor? Thanks for the help. I'm still in Chapter One, and I guess it's getting near the end, but I don't want o make a class choice that ruins the rest of the game for me.

BTW, great game. I never played Gothic 1 but am quickly falling in love with the sequel. Also, if anyone is going to suggest the thieves guild for training (don't know if there is a DEX trainer), I already cleaned it out to get in good standing with the paladins.

You really need to play gothic the first. Gives a lot of good background. Anyway check with Wolf on Onar's farm and take the path above the lighthouse, along the precipice and find another bow trainer. Later (much) Diego will train you. But it's like the sword once you get marksman in one you train for both at 5 lp apiece. The best ranged weapon is the dragon hunters xbow. So won't hurt knowing it. Don't worry about dex training, you'll find plenty of trainers as you go. You can cap to 70 for instance the second time you go to the castle in the VoM.

Mercenaries only train mercenaries etc. Mage armor rating is much better later. But as a mage you shouldn't have to worry about it as you should be able to avoid close combat. No, you can't steal anyone else's armor. But you might be able to get Wolf to make you some crawler plate armor.

Good Luck.

Have you met Dragomire - not too far from the tavern? He teaches crossbow and gives you a quest to find his. I found it (with a little help here). It's a good crossbow to use until you find the best one.

I still haven't committed myself to a guild, but I'll become a mage. Problem is that once you choose mage, leveling up any combat skill costs double. So I want to build those as high as possible before becoming a mage.

This game seems to force you more in one direction or another than Gothic 1 did. There was no penalty for combat training when you were a mage.

Still, I'll be happy being a mage. Hope you enjoy your choice, whatever you end up with.
