The reality is likely that some or all of the items on that list could be checked as motivations. I believe that it is usually a mix of selfish and selfless reasons that triggers an action like this by a government. Since the Crusades failed the British and US have decided to give it another try. It's time for Christianity to conquer the world! That's probably as accurate a reason as any. I really don't have an idea what the reasons are. |

Apparently we got some nice hypotheses on why the war is happening now. But so far we mostly only arguing from personal perspective, opinion or whatever we want ourselves to believe. And now the discussion some how descended into sarcasm.
How about for example, take a look at who is now in US administration: like their political principles or ambitions, their personal background & belief, what's the pattern of their political behavior, why Collin Powell from being a dove turned into a hawk, etc?. Even better, if we can, why don't we get some leaked, or controversial documents for discussion here (like what Wall Street Journal had done?  ).
I found that http://www.newamericancentury.org offer some interesting insight into current Us administration. In front page it says:

"inconstant leadership are making it increasingly difficult to sustain American influence around the world"

Folks all this bickering is getting us nowhere (and because the joking has already started)  , infact this entire oil-human rights issues as causes for the war are distracting form the real cause: desert truffles. Before clicking reply to put down my theory, please read! The desert truffle found in the middle east <<< http://www.trufflemarket.com/cgi-bin/market.pl?truffle_facts.htm >>> is so expensive its not even listed on the web site for sale. My conclusion drawn cunningly without forthought or research: that U.S., in order to shore up the world truffle market for its own profit, is invading Iraq to gain it's huge untaped supple of desert truffles. The French, upset that this could bring down the price of the truffles it imports form Italy, is of course upset and is using its EU friends to try and stop the U.S. Being too lazy to do research and not realy caring I have made up the following figures to support my claim: 1. the U.S. last year imported 0 desert truffles (thats a huge untapped market of Amercans that need desert truffles to buy with thier $80,000 SUVs!), 2. Iraq harvested just under .00001% of its GNP in truffles last year. However, because of Iraq's current situation, all of its truffles where consumed by the the harvester, without being sold ONCE on the open market. The U.S. being concerned that truffles, and indeed EVERTHING, should be some form of commodity, is attempting to correct the problem and fullfill its own need for desert truffles. Because no good argument is complete with an analog-- its like how pancakes and waffles started WW2. Amercans will buy anything if it will pollute the enviroment, cause 3rd world strife, or upset the French; we need desert truffles!
All joking aside, the people of Iraq have relied on everything in thier country to try to survive. They have been hunting up desert truffles for ages, and esp. in the last ten years. I ran across the desert truffle when a news agency did a story on it years ago.
