Perhaps someone can help me out...
I've managed to tweak Gothic to a playable level except for one thing...idle NPC speech. If I'm standing still amongst a group of people, their idle comments will play fine. Even if I'm wildly swinging the camera around while standing still, all comments will play fine and fully. However, if I'm walking or running past other NPCs, their speech will often be cut short. Usually the first part of the sound clip will play and then abruptly stop. It doen't happen all of the time, but it happens most of the time.
I've tried EAX2, MS DirectSound, and software to no avail. The same thing happens in all three modes. It also happens independently of screen resolution and detail modes.
I'm using the latest drivers for all of my hardware and have the following system specs:
PIII 800
384 mb ram
SBLive! sound card (the original one)
32mb GeForce2 GTS
Win98
Also, does anyone know what the following lines do in GOTHIC.INI?
inExtremoVolumeScale=1
inExtremoRangeScale=2
extendedProviders=1
Thanks in advance. |

I doubt you will be able to solve this sound problem. Seems youŽll have to live with it.
'In Extremo' is the name of the band which had a gig in the German version, in chapter 2 on the stage in the OC.
IŽm not if the last parameter refers to it, but some better sound providers were patched into the German version.

Okay, I've narrowed the problem down a little more...
...it seems to only occur when the 'foreword' key is held down. Speech plays fine when strafing left or right, or when moving backwards. Odd. I've tried re-mapping the foreword key and have the same results.
Also, the speech clipping only seems to occur when I get within close range to NPCs. If an NPC is at a far enough distance away and / or behind the player, idle speech plays fine.
?
Not a show stopper, but annoying nonetheless. |
