Lockpicking??

How *exactly* do you lockpick? I see people here talking about saving before hand, trying until you find the right combo, and then re-loading. Do you just remember if you tried left or right and then do the ones that worked? Sorry, but a thorough manual would have helped a lot. Excellent game, though... Thanks.

there ain't no manual. you just go on and try to press the right combo.

and that's the whole reason why some would suggest that you save first before picking the lock is lockpicks cost ore and once you break that lockpick it's gone, like saying if you break the lockpick you had just broken you're ore .

To pick the locks of chests or doors, first make sure you have at least one lock pick in your inventory, or your character will just shrug whenever you attempt the action.

Stand in front of the chest and press CTRL + UP Arrow key, and your character will kneel in front of it. While continuing to hold down the CTRL key, use the Left-Right Arrow keys to try the combination. When it is correct you will hear a hollow "knock" sound, and when it is wrong you will hear a grating sound, your character will automatically stand up, and your lock pick may break. Once you have found the right combination, the chest will open automatically.

The length of most lock combinations range from 4 to 6, but some have as few as 2 or as many as 8. Note that some chests and doors can NOT be opened by lock picking, and can only be opened with a specific key.

The cheat is to stand in front of a chest, then save your game. You can then experiment with the lock until you know the combination. Once the combination is known, load the game, and then unlock the chest on the "first" try, preventing you from breaking and losing lock picks.
