"unexpected failure" - very cryptic !!!

I have Gothic from a friend. On his system it installs ok (admitedly a much powerful system than mine).

I get this error when trying to install : "unexpected failure" - in sound.vdf module when is trying to ... whatever is trying to do with it.

P2 300, riva TNT2 - 64 - latest drivers, 256MB RAM, Windows 98, DirectX 9.0a
(yea, yea, some P4 2.5GHz with goodies from 21st century wouldn't hurt)

I thought it is a read error but I can copy all the files on the HDD and I also tried from both the CD-R and the CD-writer which is brand new.

I never had incompatibility troubles with the sound card before (in case sound.vdf does some checking with the audio hardware), not even with newer games, but has only software emulation. Could be some obscure .dll missing?

Never mind the performance, I know it's going to be rather slow, but I want to get there first. *grin*

Thanx

A PII 300? Well, the game needs at least a PII 400 to run.

Was there a cryptic number given in the error message?

No number, that's why I said cryptic, an error message with some number following it makes me feel comfortable, no idea why. Maybe I should reconsider and think that the message is just an ironic reminder I should buy a new system?

Still, if there were to be some system requirments test shouldn't that be performed before the actual install commences?
