I finally finished Gothic 2 at 4.30 this morning and I have to say that I was disappointed in the ending - it wasn't as 'grand' as Gothic 1. Nevertheless I enjoyed returning to the visually stimulating world of Gothic and seeing all my old friends (and monsters) again.
Anyway, after a sleep-in and a mope about the house (I don't know about anyone else but I always feel kinda empty when I finish a game) I sat down and looked through my games deciding what to play next. I'd received PotC a few weeks ago so thought I'd jump right in. The trouble is I found the controls so drawn out and confusing, at first I wondered if it was just because I was used to the simplicity of G2 so I pressed on. But, no, it wasn't that I was still in G2 mode, the controls ARE confusing. I walked thru the tutorial, but the tutor's commands weren't referred to specifically - default or otherwise. So I turned to my manual, but STILL they seemed a very long and round-about way to go about relatively simple moves. Accessing the inventory, for example. You have to go through a general command list menu to get to the inv. (which is last on the list) then you get a long scroll of items that you have to individually click along to get to what you want - extremely time consuming. Not for this game pressing 'I' and all your items are visible in blocks. There must be a quicker way, but I didn't stick around long enough to find it. Being a woman with relatively small hands I sometimes have to change the hotkeys anyway - I always change the mouse axis (this option wasn't offered) - but PotC seemed to have ignored the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" rule and instituted change merely for changes' sake.
Ssooooo........ARE the controls confusing and annoying, or IS it just me?
<sigh> I think I'll go play Sacrifice instead, or maybe Inquisition, how about Arcanum, or NWN - damm I hate having all these choices, lol. _________________ There're 3 sorts of people who're good at maths - those that are and those that aren't. |

No....its not just you.....I returned it to GAME after 1 day.....just seemed awkward and juvenile a game for an avid RPG fan.
Ive got stuck into Wiz 8 again, or is it Arcanum/NWN/IWD2???

But aren't they 2D and flat (and I'm not talking about the scenery ) ? I'm sure everyone here knows my view of 2Ders. _________________ There're 3 sorts of people who're good at maths - those that are and those that aren't. |

Although I don't quite share Sherrin's distaste for 2D CRPGs, I can tell you that having games likes Gothic and Gothic 2 spoil you somewhat.
I find myself craving for a 3D RPG that is immersive where I can explore forests, castles, houses, dungeons, etc. If you narrow down your criteria such that you only pick RPGs (NO hybrids), the choices are scant. You have Arx-Fatalis. Wonderfully immersive and detailed, but limited to interior dungeon locations. Next you have Morrowind. Lots of ground to cover, but plagued by the fact that most of it is.. well.. kind of drab. Couple that with the fact that you go through an immersion-breaking loading screen for interiors and again you are thinking about what you are missing.
Lets face it: Right now there are no other games LIKE the Gothic games. They are either (1) Not RPGS (2) Not 3D or (3) Don't offer the same "variety of exploration" as Gothics. The closest you come is Ultima IX, which is almost 4 years old now.
Anyway, to get my 3D immersion fix I've been replaying Arx Fatalis. I recently finished it for the 2nd time and it was even better than the first time I played it.... _________________ All shall hear the words of Karras...the words of Karras |

Yes, I totally agree you get spoiled. While I don't actually despise 2Ds I find I just can't get into them - like you, I like to explore things and feel as though I'm actually walking through the tree - like you do in the Gothics and Arx and Pirates of the Caribbean (but that's another story ). Plus, the figures on the 2D games are so dammed SMALL - quite why that is I haven't been able to figure out.
Elkston... Have you tried Summoner, Thief (I & II) or Mistmare? I know! I know! - Mistmare's not had a good rap, but I really Loved the game. The story-line is engrossing with its twists and turns, and plot is believable. The 3D graphics are totally immersive and there's a mix of settings, the fighting is as tough and you want and the range of monsters is amazing. Some people (read men here, lol ) thought it was slow, however, all you need is a bit of patience and once it gets going it carries you along. The only negatives I found were that you can't save (though there's a patch to remedy that - but it saves itself everytime you go into or out of a house - is that called a 'cell'?), and there's not much of a musical score. Summoner's an excellent game too, but I found the best character to play wasn't the hero (Joseph), the thief sidekick (Fleece) has more and better skills. Thief's another excellent older 3Der, with missions to complete that get harder as you progress - I'm not sure if it's actaully a RPG (but I'm sure someone will tell me).
Anyway, you're right - if you limited yourself to 3D's or 'pure' RPG's only, or you'd be playing the same ol' same ol'. I'm relatively new to gaming and I'm willing to experiment - but I'm rapidly finding out what I like and what I don't.
I've seen the Ultima's around, but aren't they all online MMORPGS?
M&M? Might & Magic? Aren't they similar to the Wizardry and the Everquest series?
I always find it interesting seeing what games people on this site like. I've bought games because of recommendations from here and I've only been put wrong a couple of times
Still, diversity is what makes it all go round. If we all liked the same things.....uummmm...... Mistmare would be a bigger seller than Gothic LMAO. _________________ There're 3 sorts of people who're good at maths - those that are and those that aren't. |

I think you might like Wizardry 8. Ask around in the forums, there are some people really in to that game around here. _________________ CaptainWorshipperNonFlamer

I know there are. I bought it. I tried it. I loathed it. I found the turn-based attack awfully slow. I didn't like the screen-type thingy at all - I know you're looking through the eyes of your character - like in Arx, and in other games you can do that do if you want to - but in Wiz 8 it felt really artificial. And I thought the controls were cumbersome and overblown. Some games I don't like at first, but I'm willing to go back and have another try - but Wiz 8 is deffinately not one I'll have another go at. I couldn't bear finishing the demo of Wiz8, as I found it distinctly horrible. A matter of taste, and I usually like 3D CRPGs.
You might want to check out Borderzone, Sherrin. It's not out yet, but what I saw of this game at the GC looked pretty nice... another third person CRPG (Gothic-style) with a huge world to explore. _________________ Jaz |

OOh another one. Thanx Jaz I've had Conan, Thief and Dungeon Lords recommended on another posting.
Makes me wonder why I'm sticking with my PC when there're alot of wonderful games that come out first on PS2 & Xbox; Like Fable, Summoner2 & the like. Why's the PC always the last format?
Also - Jaz you'll know this - what's the definition of a 'True' RPG? I can guess what an Action RPG would be. And what're the rest of the categories? _________________ There're 3 sorts of people who're good at maths - those that are and those that aren't. |

This's not the right place to ask this, but I know people are eading this, lol. If my henchman in SoU dies will he come back anywhere, like they did in the Temple in NWN? _________________ There're 3 sorts of people who're good at maths - those that are and those that aren't. |

As for the definition of a 'true' RPG... it will differ depending on whom you ask . Some people refer to number crunching CRPGs as 'true' RPGs. Some others will refer to games with the most possible degree of freedom of action as 'true' RPGs. Others might consider party-based CRPGs only as 'true' RPGs. For me, on the other hand, a 'true' RPG is a pen&paper one.
As for SoU, haven't got it, so I don't know, sorry. _________________ Jaz |
