Why don't you go to play with dolls ?? They are best suit for you.
Make me a favor, take a hammer (the big iron tool with a wood handle in your dad tools box) and destroy your PC (yes, the big coloured box where you push buttons). You are too stupid to have one.

Well, the Mac version is now available, so I'm downloading that. I'm not a huge Dungeon Siege fan, so I had gotten rid of my PC version but got the Mac version in a bundle of games I'd purchased.

... something else to play over the holidays ... cool!

Sorry, but like all Ultima games it is Single Player only!! After all, YOU are the Avatar, the greatest hero the world has ever seen. How could you possibly share that honour with anyone else!!

GREAT job

I have been waiting for this for a LONG time as well. I have played every Ultima game made ( even the hard to find ones, Savage Empire and Martian Dreams)

This is a great remake. I like the music and the sound effects. They bring me back to the days of playing the originals. So far though I don't see more interactivity with items than U5 had. But I am not very far in.

Of course the DS engine is kind of dated right now. But gameplay >>> graphics. Is it possible that Team Lazarus can make a port to DS2? Or is it just way too difficult?

And BTW great job guys! oh and don't feed the troll...

I swear Paul, you are the most annoying poster on this board.

You don't like Dungeon Seige? Fine. All you had to say was, "I don't really like Dungeon Siege, so I'll pass on this one."

Instead, you were a dick and called their work "crap" even though you haven't played it, and haven't seen how much they have changed from the original Dungeon Seige.

Look, I'm not one of these people that beleives that if something is free,, you can't say negative things about it. But at least show a modicum of respect for these guys who worked 5 years on this thing and saw it through to the end ... while so many other projects crashed and burned.

And trust me, this is no half-assed attempt. What has been released is very quality and polished work.

And for the record, I think Dungeon Seige was the best choice at the time thier project was coming together. Tiberius (the project leader) is no dummy. The graphics in DS may not be state of the art today, but at the time of its release they were breathtaking. In addtion to that, it is one of the most moddable engines out there. Nearly every game system is replacable and its scripting langauge is hugely powerful.

Sure, they could have built an engine from scratch. But on a volunteer project and with the staggering amount of content that was required to totally redo Ultima 5 (and knowing that they couldn't even *start* until the engine was finished)? It would take forever. Not to mention the expertise that would have been required to code a modern 3d engine from the ground up. Who would want to do that for free?

I suggest you learn some manners.

Thanks and yeah im not reading all that but no i dont just post "this doesnt look good" When something looks like garbage i will say so and this looks like garbage and will have the same boring dull combat as Dungeon Siege therefor its a big smelly pile of Crap i always point out the crap of every game and theres always some one who loves these type of games so they will cry over my posts but tough thats life and its still crap.

I don't suppose this will work with Dungeon Siege 2? I'm not even sure if I still have the CD for DS 1 around anywhere.

lazarus

Paul.

you say what you think... ok.
BUT how can you say that Lazarus is crap because Dungeon Siege was bad. How could you possibly compare it to the original dungeon siege...
...be aware it's not dungeon siege, it's even not near the same game.

it's completely non linear, it's a completely different game. ... well go to the official website and read !!!!!!!

If you say Lazarus is crap, you are saying all the Ultima games are crap.

just go and read about something before saying it's crap.

my two cents...

I got it downloaded and I've started playing. While the game is built on the Dungeon Siege engine, it is nothing like Dungeon Siege the game. They've done some amazing things with the engine. Heck, I was even able to harvest a field of wheat and reagents in the forest. I wasn't expecting that, but it's nice to see that they've paid attention and added in even the little details from Ultima 5.
Combat is different, there isn't Diablo-style waves of enemies being thrown at you.

I'm sorry Val, but you must be wrong, just as I'll wrong when I reinstall DS on my Mac and start playing and enjoying it ... Paul has decreed it crap that is just like DS, so therefore it must be ... we all just must be fanbois or something

Unfortunately, according to the developers, the game will NOT work with DS2!!

You can, there can never be 1 hero.

in Naruto they say that the key to success is teamwork, same thing goes to this.

I'm downloading the mod, hoping it will be good enough to outweigh the cons of Dungeon Siege system (Combat system... Too automated for my liking)

multiplayer was intended but they found it impossible to implement so its single player.

The Dungeon Siege graphics were breathtaking at the time but the game obviously turned out to be poor. There was a lot of hope that mods could be made to make up for this but apparently the toolset was quite poor compared to Morrowind and of course NWN. This is what I've heard anyway.

this mod was approved of by Richard Garriot in an email while he worked for EA. After Garriot was gone EA made a public statement that Garriot's email held no legal ground but they haven't thrown a lot of money at fighting at least this one.

One would think that Lazarus's host being dungeonsiege.com with backing by MS caused them to stand back.

That is correct; Lazarus is not compatible with Dungeon Siege 2. DS2 uses the same basic engine as the original Dungeon Siege, and while it may be possible to convert it, the larger issue is that we used many of the original game's art assets to build Britannia, and those art assets are owned by Microsoft. We wouldn't have the rights to distribute any artwork that was not our own creation. And we made extensive use of the existing DS terrain meshes and textures to create the basic landscape.

As it is, there is already 160 MB of artwork in the Lazarus .dsres files. The entire download is over 500 MB, and there is another 700 MB worth of artwork in the basic DS game.

The Dungeon Siege toolset is actually very good... it's just more than a little obtuse at times, and takes a while to get the hang of. But it is a very powerful and flexible engine, far more so than NWN, and probably Morrowind as well. The NWN toolset is great for throwing together something quickly, but you can't even mix tile/node sets within one area. Plus, you're stuck with the D&D ruleset, which isn't appropriate for every game. With the Siege Engine, you can actually strip out all of the Dungeon Siege mechanics and replace them with something new -- which is what we did for Lazarus.

1. The DS engine is by far the most appropriate choice for Lazarus, as it comes the closest to allowing for a 3D recreation of the Ultima VII engine. Morrowind or Neverwinter Nights certainly aren't flexible enough.

2. And you say this based on... what, screenshots? We've replace the combat mechanics of Dungeon Siege with a recreation of the combat system used in Ultima V. It still plays out in real-time, but it is much more similar to Baldur's Gate or Ultima VII than Dungeon Siege.

It's been five and a half years, actually, since Tiberius began pre-production work on it, and thousands of hours of work on the part of the team.

Thanks for casually dimissing our work without even giving it a try though. That's always very rewarding.
