I have played through BG2 as a fighter goody two-shoes (yawn).

I am now playing again as a magic user,

However, from the first game, I am aware that magic is forbidden in the town.

Anyone else find a problem as a mage during encounters outside in the town ?

Just want to know how it affects encounters etc

I played it first time as mage (I did not finish it, but I was near end).
I had not much problems with this. But you should hire at least two good melee fighters.
I think that there are not many fights in this magicsrestricted areas.

There's really not. The random encounters don't count, which just leaves a few 'thug' battles in a few areas.

However, if you're a solo mage... why not take the 5000 gold and pay for a license? After all, you don't need it for much else and 5000 is pretty easy to make.

Ah, but if you are playing an evil character, don't you want to pick fights with everyone?
Besides, there is a way around paying the bribe or fighting wave after wave of wizards. If you just want to be done with them easily, do this: Have a mage cast any spell that will attract the attention of the wizards, any old protection spell should do. A lone wizard will pop in to chew you out and then bring in several more wizards to kill you. He'll have some kind of protection spell going.
The very instant he actually shows up pause the game. Employ the 'fake talk' strategy: Have someone talk to him and unpause. Pause again before anyone actually walks over and starts talking to him, then force-attack him while he still has the blue circle around him. You probably won't be able to hit him due to his powerful protection spells, but that doesn't matter. Every 5 seconds or so, back off and fake-talk him again. As long as you keep doing this, he won't go hostile and his friends won't gate in. Within a short period of time, his spell wears off and he returns to a more normal-looking color. At this point he's now vulnerable. So kill him. After this, no more wizards will show up and attack you for spellcasting.
Apparently, since he never gets to speak, the game never triggers any more attacks since the first attack was never completed.

Yes, but that's 'cheating'.

If you go that route, why not just hit 'control-shift-y" and watch him explode into a pile of chunky meaty bits? Repeat as neccessary.

I was providing a no-cheat solution to mage problems.

Employing 'fake attack' isn't a strategy, in my books. No more than dropping an atomic bomb on a duckpond... just to be sure... is.

It's like saying 'If I turn invulnerable... I should be able to get through the next level.'

I'm not bashing that 'tactic'. If that's what you like to do, then do it. It's your game experience. However, I don't think it should be offered as a 'strategy' for playing a mage character.
