Heh. Well, once you get used to the change in the AI's accuracy and slower shield regeneration looks like X3 is as 'friendly' towards mass slaughter as X2.

The Paranid have declared me an enemy of their holy empire and have flagged me as kill on sight. Something to do with capturing dozens of transports and destroying probably five times that number.

Picture one sector, Paranid Prime. Home to one of the most heavily shielded, heavily armed warrior races in the galaxy. Defended by a massive sector defense fleet with reinforcements waiting to jump in at a moment's notice it is a safe place to be... invulnerable to Khaak and Pirate incursions.

Enter one Nova Raider equipped with Alpha High Energy plasma cannons (not even beta, no ion cannon, no mass drivers. Those suckers are like cheating).

God knows how many hours of intense carpal inducing dogfighting later the Paranid Prime defense fleet (and two waves of reinforcements that jumped in) were flaming wreckage floating through the void of space.

Dancing through the massive field of fire to close with the Odysseus (too close for its guns to fire at me) was interesting. Man, do capital ships ever dish it out.

The best part was the capital ship deaths. They're so drawn out in X3... slow fires burning, explosion ripping through the superstructure... just like a movie capital ship death. Well, right until the final 'kaboom' because X3 isn't finished yet so the capital ships have fighter explosions as placeholders. So do stations.

I had the odysseus and zeus blow the crap out of each other by flying between them and dancing around wildly. Totally insane. I got winged a few times by GPPC ... a single white 'snowball' does something like 30,000 shield damage. Eventually I just zoomed in and under the bow of the Zeus... the Ody took it out in a few seconds after that trying to blast me (but I got the kill shot with a full burst of ahepts).

The Ody went the same way, really... its shields were mostly depleted by the pounding the Zeus had laid on it so I basically just hovered 10 meters away from its hull in a turret blind spot and held position until it croaked.

What an anti-climax!

I'm tempted to pick up X3, but I just don't have time for it. Which was my problem with X2. So much to do, so little time.

It's even more time intensive than X2. Ships are slower, sectors are bigger, and you typically need to travel farther to make a profit. Combine this with BBS missions being (far too) few and you end up with a much slower paced game.

Hmmm...

After dedicating about 4 months to working thru X2 (and still ended up getting frustrated with the final mission and bailing), I'm thinking I'd better put X3 on the "wait for the bargain bin" list.

Sounds like it might not be a good gaming choice for an incompetent pilot.

Bah. There's not a lot to do besides cap ships as a competent pilot. That's part of the complaints on the egosoft boards.

It's all about money. The ones with the biggest toys are those who have 250 factories or complexes churning out goods and fueling the economy. X3 is even more of an economic simulator than X2 was.

This is definately a "wait till summer" title. Of course, that's when I was planning to get around to finishing X2!

Well, won't be taking any more sectors out like that!

The patch taught the computer how to shoot. Unfortunate in some ways... while you shouldn't be able to strafe-roll away with impunity the way it's fixed now dodging barely works at all. Slow ships just get mulched...

Three M5 are a threat to a non-turreted M3 now. That's not a bad thing but it is a little bit of a slap in the face. They no longer slow to your speed to attack, either... the AI is improved enough that they strafe you at 300 leaving you targeting a ship that is LONG gone.

Nasty all around. I'm finding it challenging to get used to. Lots of reloads.
