NPD catches up on PC sales @ GameSpot

Frankly, it's about time. NPD has finally caught up with the modern era, releasing new PC game sales figures that take into account online sales and subscription models. The result is a jump from ~$900M in 2005 to their current estimate of $1.4B:
When the research group originally released its figures for the 2005 PC industry back in January, it noted the deficiency of its existing system of accounting for total PC sales. While the company's figures showed a decline in retail sales, its feedback from consumers indicated that playing PC games was actually on the rise.

I think that is even low since most retail outlets have greatly reduced the shelf space and sales of pc games while online availabilty and sales are a lot hirer. From what I have seen of retail outlets there is probably more online sales then retail store sales when it comes to games since some game are not even available in retail outlets and the ones that are usually don't have enough copies available.

Took NPD long enough. It is weird though, because 1.4billion seems small. The number I've often heared bandied around (though rumor hardly has any right to trump hard facts) is more in the 4billion/year range..
