This is exactly what i meant,

Install ONLY 2 sticks of 256 mem = total of 512. then do a comparison.

I'll try that in a few days. Threw out my back and will not be playing with it soon. I am going to clarify, you think I should put in only the two 256 sticks first and try it, or put them in slots 0 and the two 128 sticks in slot 1 at same time? I don't see loosing the two 128 sticks making sense to me. Sorry for being so dumb. But I will leave you alone after this. (At least for a while. )

The battle between the amount and speed has been an eternal struggle... The ultimate point of any memory is to be the fastest. Having lots of it is also an imperative, but if you had a choice, you would go for faster memory. The reason is simple - the speed of memory determines the overall speed of the whole system.

But, you wouldn't want to have less than 512 Mb nowadays, because it can easily get full, and that's when the speed issue surfaces again. Namely, in that case, the system (unless otherwise noted) will use swap to compensate for the lack of space. A swap is a file on your hard disk, and the hdd is significantly slower than any memory out there...

So, a compromise is needed. If the two modules of 128 Mb are actually slower than the rest of the memory modules, it is my suggestion to remove them. The 512 Mb you currently have are sufficient for the time being.

And, I don't think you're dumb! In fact, I blame the whole world for a as-much-as-you-can-get-memory stereotype. Frankly, I get a rash whenever I ask any of my acquaintance about their memory, because all they ever state is the amount...

A sidenote: I didn't quite catch the model of your mtherboard, so it might not be bad if you check it's documentation to see whether combining, for instance, 1st and 3rd slot gives any performance boost. Most memory controllers support more-than-basic interlacing between modules i.e. banks.

Thanks HWFanatic. I can get that info from gateway. Hopefully I'll get someone who knows what they are talking about. I can check in their tech support files as well. As I said, bad back and not getting better fast. It may be next week at this rate. I have a tall tower and can only put it on the floor. Crawling is therefore called necessary. May be after christmas come to think of it. Lots to do. I'll try getting info and putting the two. 256 sticks in slot 0 so they are accessed first. I know it is not that way now. That makes sence when you think about it. Thanks again. I'll post and let all know what differences I see.

Fixed my jerking by using a faster memory timing in the bios

Took me a long time to get back, but if anyone is still interested, I took Wulf's advice and put the 256 cards in slot 0 and then the 128 cards in slot 1 and it made a difference. The game reformated itself for VM and I have had no crashes and no stops in mid walk unless I play for 8 plus hours and have numerous saves. Then I start to see the memory related problems. I think is more like a defrag problem then anything else. Thanks for help Wulf. My whole system starts faster when I turn it on.

Hey there cmckj50,

You certainly did'nt rush things (ha ha, only joking) but honestly, i
suspected it would improve things for the better, i have had similar prob's
on various other people's machines and it has made a difference.

The number of machines running with miss-matched memory is huge!
and i suppose it will allways be a problem, especially to the non-tech'
P.C owners.

Good to have feedback, thanks.

Thank you for the info. Too bad the guys that sold me the memory upgrade couldn't have told me that. You would think they would be a little helpful with the money I put out for this machine. But thank goodness for this place. I've learned more here than from all the books and videos that came with this PC.
