***********************************

Hello, my name is Douglas Bentley and I have recently purchased Gothic for the PC.

I have been hearing great things about the game for years and finally decided to buy it and give it a go.

I instantly loved it, however, I am encountering a horrible, game ruining error that continues to affect me in the EXACT same spot in the game every single time, no matter what I do!!!

*** The game will instantly boot me out to Windows and an error message will pop up. I then must restart the game, but the error will happen again whenever I am in a specific area of the old camp...

*** This error constantly pops up in the SAME PLACE no matter what I do.

*** HERE ARE THE EVENTS THAT PRECEED THE ERROR'S OCCURENCE:

*) At the start of the game, when you have gone into the Old Camp, you are told that in order to join, you must gain the votes of all of the influential people in order for Diego to give you the "Test" to become a member.

*)Well, I had done all the ones I was supposed to leaving the few that take you out of the Old Camp until a bit later (as you are supposed to).

*)I went to the cave where you find Nek's body and retrieved his amulet. while out there, I also went to the nearby hidden cave and spoke to Gilbert.

*)I then headed back to the Old Camp in order to give Nek's amulet to Sly to complete his task. I did this.

*)I then went to Snaf (the chef), and gave him the ingredients he requires to make the stew, thus completing his task as well.

*)I then went out the rear exit and started heading towards the Free Mine, killing a few wolves on the way...

***) However, I only went a few feet, and realized I wanted to go out the front exit instead, so I turned around and went back into the Old Camp through the rear entrance...

****) As soon as I entered, I made a right and when I pass the arena... BOOM the game kicks me out to Windows and the error message I have included below pops up. The game is exited automatically, but the music still plays while the error message is up. I also, can not use my mouse pointer when I try and go into the message box to copy/paste. It must go behind the error message or something because it is there and working and just disappears when brought over/within the error message.

THIS OCCURS EVERY SINGLE TIME I GET TO THAT SPOT!!!!!

*** HERE ARE THE THINGS I HAVE DONE TO TRY AND "FIX" THE GAME AND AVOID THE ERROR:

1.) I started the install process and chose "REPAIR" to try and fix the problem. (ERROR STILL OCCURED)

2.)I made sure I had the latest patch, I used patch 1.08 because I was told it IS the newest one. If I am wrong about this, please be sure to contact me and tell me this. (ERROR STILL OCCURED)

3.)I then changed the sound provider from "EAX" to "MILES." (ERROR STILL OCCURED)

4.)I changed the sound from "SURROUND" to "4 SPEAKER." (ERROR STILL OCCURED)

5.)I then downloaded and installed the newest driver for my "NVidia GE-Force 4 Ti 4600" graphics card. (ERROR STILL OCCURED)

6.) I then downloaded and installed the newest driver for my "Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer" sound card. (ERROR STILL OCCURED)

*** HERE ARE MY COMPUTER'S SPECS:

COMPUTER BRAND: Sony Vaio
COMPUTER SPECS: Pentium 4 -- 2.0 gig -- 512mb --
2 hard drives: #1=60gig(games,demos,pictures+media)
+ #2=20gig(Win and system stuff)
GRAPHICS CARD: Nvidia, GeForce 4 Ti 4600 with 128 Mb
SOUND CARD: SoundBlaster Audigy Gamer
INTERNET CONNECTION: Comcast Cable Modem

*** HERE IS MY PERSONAL INFO IN CASE YOU NEED TO CONTACT ME:

NAME: Douglas Bentley
E-MAIL ADDRESS: xelatoth@comcast.net

HERE IS MORE ABOUT THE PROBLEM:

(The error message told me to mail it to you piranhabytes a error.txt form, but I can neither find it nor even get a mouse pointer within the sphere of the error message itself to copy/paste it here.) (and their mail is inactive anyhow!)

*** The following is the error message EXACTLY as it appeared to me after being kicked out of Gothic:

******************** END OF ERROR MESSAGE ********************

Ok, well that is pretty much all of the information that I can come up with. I am hoping with bated breath that it will not only be enough, but that it will also be adequate enough for someone to figure out what the heck is going on and what, if any, is the solution to my problem.

Please get back to me ASAP, even if it is just to tell me you can not fix it.

Please keep me informed no matter what the case is because I would really appreciate knowing that you received this e-mail (it took me a LONG time to write..lol)

*** Well, that's it...

Thank you for your anticipated help on my problem, and I am looking forward to hearing from someone/anyone shortly..

Until then...

Take Care, and...

THANX

I dont remember if I had the same error but mine also started like yours:
...bla bla access violation at adress bla bla while attempting to write...bla bla.
This error is stored in the gothic files: D:\program files\gothic\access violation
or in whatever folders you install gothic1.
BY the way I must say that you are a wise man to keep in different drive system files.Very nice.
your system is vey "strong" so its not its fault.
Maybe is the music ...try to set it "off" from the menu off gothi1 and do the same things.
The one thing I find weird its that the error is occured in the same spot again and again.(mine was in random places)So its must be an error in the procedure from the way in the "outer ring" inside Old Camp.Try to load a different save and see what happens.
...hhhmm...something else where did you find the game? But this doesnt make any dif, I think.
The last thing that pops to my head to do its to uninstall the game from add/remove proggrams and then reinstall. But first check out your saves like I said before cause the error is copied to the save in order the game to crash in the same spot...if you know what I mean.
Did you mess up with .ini files or cheating like marvin mode? because errors seem to appear when those stuffs are picked.
I know that I didnt helped you a lot but the access violations errors during my game disapperead after a while with out doing anything.....strange things with
PCs.If its "broken" a little or nothing to be done. Some get lucky and play it normally and others not.

Thanx- im gonna try an older save

Hey, thanks for the advice...

I am going to load an earlier save and go from there... hopefully without it happening again.

I DID mess around with some of the "marvin mode" cheats, but only to check them out, and then I set it all back to default, but maybe something I did tripped a bug or something.. who knows?

Anyway, thanx again for the help...

Hi there,

I haver exacly the same problem: I haver reinstalled the game several times, I haver deactivated the intro videos, new drivers and so on, but I still get the ERROR at the same piont.

I have used teh mavin-mode once, because I had died (I fell to deep).

Is there nothing I can do but start a new game?
Is there no entry in any of the game files that I can change that the program "doesn't know" that I have cheated? I don't want to start again.

Please answer. I am lucky for every reply. Thx to everybody who answers me.

I played G1 one time to the end and let it rest. About a month ago I tried again but did errors, very much type. I think it included this type, too. I tried to reinstall, but it wasn't useful. I gave it up.

You'll have to bring us up to speed with which Windows do you have installed? And, as a sidenote, all the access violations look alike, and they can mean something only to the person that is acquainted with the source code.

I am using WinXP, P4 3,0 GHz, 512MByte RAM.... but I think this is not so important, because I think I have found the solution!!!!!

I have deactivated the sound (FX and music) in the gothic.ini. Then I have started Gothic, walked through the "cursed" point (killed the freaking Scavenger) and saved. I've quit Gothic, turned the sound on again and went on playing without any trouble!!!!

Really, it works!!!! Try out an see.

The only thing is, that gothic crashes now when I quit, but this ain't so bad. Windows doesn't crash and I save before I leave. So this is not a big problem.

I hope I won't have any more trouble with the game and I hope I coulde help you a bit, too.
