Jagged Alliance: Wildfire - Interview @ Gamespot

Strategy First producer Jeff Giasson has been <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/jaggedalliance2wildfire/preview_6085504.html" target="_blank">interviewed</a> at Gamespot about Jagged Alliance: Wildfire:<blockquote><em>GS: Why did you decide to make an expansion pack for Jagged Alliance 2?
<br>
<br>Jeff Giasson: Well, I would like to clear one thing up right away. Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire is not an expansion pack, but more a reimaging of the original game. Let me explain. There were extensive changes made to the game, but [it seems more accurate to call it] an "add-on."</em></blockquote>

JA2 Wildflyers

Anyone else notice that JA2W is basically identical to JA2? They're taking a fan made mod that functionally changes 5% of the game and charging money for it. If they want to generate interest in their JA2 license they should give this sh*t away, like every other fan does on the internet.

To me the whole thing spells R-I-P-O-F-F (that spells "ripoff" by the way).

The JA2 engine is so archaic that it still manages to have perfromance problems on 2Ghz machines, but what are you going to do? It's still the best game of all time. RPG elements, open-ended gameplay, careful tactical mechanics, and of course so very many exciting guns.

The choice to go with the WF mod is just bizarre IMHO when that one is known mostly for introducing many, many Russian weapons (and rebalancing all weapons) and for making the gameplay so hard that most people don't want to bother. Such a curious move, especially when you consider that the Urban Chaos mod over at Bearpit's Forums is a much more complete conversion, apparently with a new plot, some new mercs, and new tilesets. I just don't understand why you wouldn't make use of something like that if you're going to be providing retail packaging for your mod community.

But what do I know?
