there's three alchemists tools that I know of - a mortar & pestle is one, an alembic is another, and then theres one other. You can buy them at an alchemist's shop, but they are pretty pricey and come in apprentice, journeyman, and master versions depending on how much you spend.

Once you have the alembic or whatever in inventory, you drag and drop it on the character like if you were equipping a weapon or whatever. This will bring up the alchemy screen where you can mix your potions.

BTW repairing your weapons and armor works the same way, you have to buy tools - I've seen a big hammer, and some tongs. You equip those and it brings up a little repair window where you click on items and try to repair them. Keep your weapons repaired it makes a big difference (I was running around the wilderness with a long sword that was really doing nothing for awhile there )

Mortar & Pestal - Req to mix
Retort - Increases magnitude & Duration of all positive effectts
Alembic - Decreases the Magnitude & duration of negative effects
Calcinator - Increases magnitude & Duration of ALL effects

Moving this to spoilers and answering: upstairs at the vendor is this book (dunno if at the armorer or the normal vendor).
